I wouldn't be crazy about facing him, but let them get him. It would be a waste for them to make a move now, and they would just be hurting themselves for the future.

My point isn't that they don't have options or assets. My point is that this FO is, for the first time, dealing from a position of so many possibilities that they can't focus on the one or two moves that you say is all we need to go into the playoffs (hopefully) in a position of strength.

But the cost does rise as you get closer to the deadline, and everyone and their mother knows LA needs a SP and BP help and can ask for more because we have more. The teams with tradable assets under contract will command more because they are locked in and aren't rentals.

So the FO may need to give up a piece or two they normally wouldn't had they stayed in Oakland or Tampa Bay, namely prospects.

At the same time, they may be reluctant to give up the potential of a Puig or Pederson (face it, no ones really gonna want an Ethier or Kendrick or Rollins), even though, we may be able to because we have the cash to get someone else or bring up a prospect.

It's classic psychology. When you have a lot, you may think the natural tendency is to give some away. But it's not. Sometimes people approach like it's a zero sum game.

When Greinke goes, things will not be the same for the almighty powerful Dodgers...Ryu is not Greinke, and who knows how far he gets back at all.
Along with DL darling McCarthy, and a precarious Anderson.
None of the minor leaguers are are proven elements , and how long they will be down is shaky, at best. We very recently witnessed what a first round, previously untouchable draft pick did...to phenomenon status to "he can probably pitch somewhere on some team as an innings eater"...
The status of "elite"is the new envelope...maybe because there are people on here that have never seen a world championship won in LA, or were too young to remember it.
I've seen them all, every one, and that's what matters in BB, modern or past.
I guess it's all different now. If having this pitching staff in this shape ( SP AND BP) in almost August is a position of power, and a fairly good lead shrink to what it is today- then so be it.
    The New Power.
We'll see if it's any different this time round.

Dodgers Prioritizing Cole Hamels In Search For Pitching
By Steve Adams [July 28, 2015 at 4:29pm CDT]
The Dodgers are prioritizing Cole Hamels in their search for rotation upgrades, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Los Angeles “wants to exhaust” the option of acquiring Hamels before moving onto a “Plan B” like Yovani Gallardo. Per Sherman, the Dodgers continue to insist that they will not part with top prospects Corey Seager and Julio Urias, however.

Refusal to move either Seager or Urias will certainly work against the Dodgers, who face steep competition in the market for Hamels. The Giants are said to be making a “strong push,” and the Astros are also pushing for the Philadelphia ace. The Rangers have been discussing prospects with the Phillies recently, and the Diamondbacks have emerged as somewhat of a surprise candidate in the Hamels sweepstakes as well. The Cubs are said to merely be “on the periphery” of the Hamels market.

The Phillies have asked that teams make their best offers for Hamels by tomorrow, per ESPN’s Jayson Stark, and his previously scheduled Thursday start has been pushed back to Friday — after the trade deadline — so as not to risk an injury and to potentially make him immediately available to start for an acquiring team. Over the weekend, Stark characterized the Dodgers as one of the favorites for Hamels.

BTW, if the Phillies said to the Dodgers, either Seager or Urias and Puig, or else Hamels goes to the Giants, do you go immediately to Plan B and hope for the best?

You tell them to shove it up their ass and call their bluff. Giants don't have much to offer Philly That trade makes us worse.

That's the threat though, well give Hamels to your rivals, that's breathing down your neck for marginally less in return.

Yes, it's blackmail, but it sounds like that has happened to us in the past.

Anyway, that's just my nightmare scenario.

We can reasonably offer something like DeLeon/SVS/Bellinger/Anderson and it would be better than anything SF can offer. Doing offers for substantially less to spite a team is what gets people fired.

The Giants would have to take from their big league roster to make it work, probably at least 2 of Crawford/Susac/Panik/Duffy in addition to top farm hand Kyle Crick.

I think it's hilarious that Detroit won't trade Price.

Hamels is obviously the top prize as would be price but let's not forget our bullpen is still shit. Unless these guys go 8-9 innings per start we have to upgrade in that area.
