Hernandez said we would never compete with this roster. That we would be a third place team because of the nerds So not making to the world series is quite different.
As much as it would be nice to read that in passing about another team and that it sucks that it's about OUR team, it was absolutely SPOT ON.
Have you seen the one that just ended? NL Westworld? It was good for a while, really well played...but it had a sappy, weak, predictable ending.
I'll admit, I never read what he wrote...I just went from your original post, and assumed he admonished the FO for the band aid approach. Responded to that...obviously there was additional aspects to consider. OK with me if he's a douchebag, though. Being we are right hack to Palookaville where we always wind up, I just find agreement with somebody else who finds the Nerds less than the second coming. Didn't know there was more...
Damn... I wish I had you as my calculus teacher back in the day with that wuss mark...I coulda been a contenda...
There's two schools of thinking here: 1) there is 1 winner and 29 losers and 2) refuting that theory because winning the WS is incredibly hard. The more we just accept that and move on, the better.
What is a contender though? A guy who won or a guy who contended? We contended with the team who is favored to win. I get that we have also made it to the posteason in the past, but when we lost there wasnt a lot of hope left. We are full of good young players and more on the way to take the place of these bandaid types that we dont like. Seager should improve some more and put up Kris Bryant type numbers and challenge him for MVP. Urias will probably have a great first full season the way Seager had this year and be our Kyle Hendricks.
a, for the foresight to acquire depth no way we would have gotten to the postseason without it b, for firing mattingly b only because it could have been done sooner a, for hiring dave roberts they obviously saw something most of us did not a+, for not caving in and trading joc, corey and urias f, for signing guys like kazmir and mehcarthy c-, for giving anderson a qualifying offer they felt they had to at the time, but he ultimately contributed <zero a, for trading kemp and acquiring grandal a, for dfa'ing carl and guerrero as far as results go (not sure if we're grading on that)... if they get a failing grade for not getting to the ws then they get a++ marks for taking a team -- with the most dl time in mlb history -- and not only getting them to the postseason but winning the division after trailing by 8 games and then winning and lds they had no business winning and actually taking a brief lcs lead against a far better team my overall grade, b+
Well, the team won the West and went to a 6th game of the NLCS, so it can't be an F. But their greatest failing is still relying on a hodge podge SP rotation at the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots. #3 was the big problem in the playoffs as we got no production there. The BP was better than expected compared to the start of the season, but we really could have used a shutdown setup guy who if asked could pitch 2 innings. Not sure we had that. Toughest to figure out was our offense. So inconsistent when it counted....not sure how to evaluate that. Fact is, we were lucky to get this far. It took an epic collapse by the Gnats, and superhuman pitching from Kershaw and Kenley. But luck isn't the basis for grading FO performance. B-
I'm with you on the FO grade. But this thread is polarizing, interesting, fun, and continually relevant. I've really enjoyed this thread.
Last development that qualified for me was checking Puig and putting him in his place. Left the deadline w/o him, so the C grade I gave them before the season moved to a flat B grade for that alone and thats where it still is for me...unless they bring Puig back next season. Lol Bring Puig back next year and I have to drop'em to a D. Don't do it..forget 2013..onward to the Seager era.
I do enjoy the different takes, for sure. But it reminds me of politics at times lol. Two different ways of thinking and you're not going to change anyone's opinion.
If there was no bitching and moaning and disagreements about the front office, well it wouldn't be Dodger baseball.
It can be an F if I say it is. That's my grade, whether you like it or not, accept it or not. Getting to the WS is an A. Failing to get there is an F. It's not like losing in the post season is an unheard of achievement or never been done before. They fucking failed, just like everyone before them failed...nothing new. F. I think all the B- are a unrealistically comical, tbh, but I don't say "it can't he that".
And as always, the poll pretty much speaks for itself. The FO has about as many A grades as F grades, so I'm unsure if the thread actually served the OP's purpose. Majority rules.
So....they made it further than I thought they would. Gotta give the team a bit of credit for that. But in the end, they were simply out gunned. Cant win the race without the horses. D and only because of the effort of the players. The nerds are 100% to blame for the loss. They inherited a very good team and farm and lucked into a postseason appearance inspite of their best efforts to feild a puzzle of marginal players. Hee Seop Choi is waiting for his call .268 35 108 .304 would look pretty solid in LF Was very happy Puig was sent down. Only problem is now that its looking like he might have gotten his head on right, the computer might suggest we trade him plus 60M for a 37yr old ambidextrous pitcher:dizzy: Completely random thoughts here and very serious. But would anyone flinch if Kershaw was flipped for some young arms? After another ehhh showing I dont think it will be a tough sell. Food for thought as they must continue to shed payroll. 2020 will be here soon and with it, if not sooner, will come another market correction much like 2008. These guys know it and you can bet your ass they have mandates for payroll to be extra thin the closer we get to it. Happy winter
Why can't people understand that they just got outplayed by a better team? This is arguably the best Cubs team of all time. Not that I'm OK with losing, but at least use some sort of perspective. 2 wins away from the WS and y'all are acting like they finished behind the Padres. The whole narrative of the FO being "geniuses" probably plays a huge role in that I guess. Wish that it wasn't spun that way by the media.
