Peter Tork dies at 77... 10 year battle with tongue cancer
    [IMG]

Bandmate Micky Dolenz posted on Twitter: 'There are no words right now...heart broken over the loss of my Monkee brother, Peter Tork.'

He and Mike Nesmith's The Mike & Micky Show is currently touring the US until March 16. Australia and New Zealand dates are scheduled for June.

Nesmith posted on Facebook: 'Just got the news that Peter died. I am heartbroken. -Nez.'

'Peter Tork died this AM. I am told he slipped away peacefully. Yet, as I write this my tears are awash, and my heart is broken. Even though I am clinging to the idea that we all continue, the pain that attends these passings has no cure. It's going to be a rough day.'

    Loved the Monkees.
I never cared they were not a real band.
    They were real enough later.
And the songs are long lasting.

The Monkees was my weekend morning view when I was young. Loved that show. They may have started out as a parody, but they were talented, they could sing, and ultimately the songs they did sing were great....some even timeless. That is what ultimately matters right?

    RIP Mr. Tork.

I know we are all going to die one day - except Keith Richards. That bastard is forever.

Still, it does get into my head when I see guys my age start dropping. Rockers and wild men from the 60s and 70s figured to check it sooner rather than later, right? But I've had six classmates from the 1983 group die now, in a class of 191. That's not too bad, but four of them were far healthier and devoted to health than I have been. But ALS, cancer, suicide, and accidents take people in their prime all the time. Such is life, huh?

One of those calls last year was a "Jim Fixx" situation. Unlike Fixx, this guy never smoked a cig. He drank maybe ten times his whole life, and was a gym rat. Good guy, no drugs, no fooling around on his wife or any of that. Goes to work one day, tightens up at his desk, drops dead of a heart attack. 52. So odd how fast it happens sometimes.

So I'm at the LAX Sheraton this weekend with a school function ...

I just heard a Latina woman of about 40 refer to a kid as a "negro young man" ....

What the exact fuck? I'm a puffy old conservative and even I haven't said that word with a straight face in about 35 years...

negro just means black in spanish
    comes from the latin niger
of course we pronounce niger as nigh-jurr because...
but in latin it was pronounced knee-gair

I get that. But she is clearly pretty americanized, and I guess I haven't heard anyone refer to a Black or African American man or woman as a negro for a very long time.

LOL ... I said to my coworker, "Why not say colored, or perhaps mulatto?"

I remember my grandpa calling a guy an octaroon once. Of course, he was born in 1890, so just like John Wayne, he was another evil racist because #HONKY.

all latin countries i've been to refer to the darkest skinned amongst us as negros, pronouncing it like nay grow, not knee grow, nay gra, not knee gra
if you aren't quite that dark you are moreno or morena
and all the other variations of color description
skinny people are flacas and fat people gordos
there's like a million ways of describing people and its usually done to your face and not to be taken as an insult
now if you hear huevon, mamon etc. you are being insulted
at least thats been my experience

The last time I said negro is when Obama's birth certificate read 'African American' when it should have read ' Negro' in the race description, considering the year in which he was born.
    Lol.
