I'm an east coast guy too, but even I can tell you...STOP READING THE LA TIMES. Those guys are all hacks.

Secondly, I stand by my comments, there was no "by their own admission". By your own admission, all you have is writers, not team personnel, using the word 'dysfunction' as if it were the new "hot button". Those writers have planted dysfunction in your head and that is now what you perceive. So, in short, commenting on what you have read is NOT "by their own admission." And please don't try to spin it again, you said what you said. It was incorrect.

how is it that Scherzer and Shields remain unsigned?

either would/could/should make a difference to ANY roster... let alone noting that depleting Detroit of pitching can only be a good thing

well, Scherzer has Boras for an agent, so that's self explanatory.

and Shields refuses to understand that he's not worth as much as Cole Hamels over the next 4yrs.

    so here we are.

You refuse to understand inflation. He'll get 20 million per year for sure, maybe more.

And in that world where Shields is indeed worth more than Hamels, you know, the one with a yellow sun and blue sky, then what?
(and don't get all bent on me, I'm just saying that Hamels performance as dropped farther than Shields. I agree that he WAS better and thus had farther to fall, but today each is 31 and IF most recent performance is any indicator of what we'd see in 2015 then we're better off with Shields)

But thanks for the Scherzer insight... that did explain it well

no, bro..each is not 31. Shields is 33. Hamels will be 31 in a few.

you think Shields is better than Hamels?

i highly doubt somebody is gonna give 33yr old James Shields 20M a year.

and he wants 110M to boot. not happenin.

following his worst one... which was all I was saying.. recent decline... losing his edge? Worst SO/BB ratio in his career...

Clearly we'd do well to land either one but it appears that Shields is closer to his mid career peak whereas Hamels has dropped off more

if he just had one of the better years of his career..how's he dropped off?

    and he's 30.

and the 33yr old Shields' playoff performance was despicable. he was beaten and battered by the 4th inning seemingly every time out.

and Hamels' off year in '13 still saw him K 202, walk 50 with a 1.15 WHIP and a 3.26 FIP. better numbers than Shields put up that year.

he was still a hell of a pitcher.

he's gonna be fightin for that 4th year at age 33 ( which might be why he's asking for a 5yr deal). he might get the 4th year, but he has a load of innings on that arm and it showed in the post season.

most might prefer a 3yr deal for him which means somebody will probably go to 4. i'll say 70-72M/4yrs. Giants might have to overpay because of the state tax.

not that my point is being repeatedly ignored but... the Dodgers would benefit by landing either of them

I was stating that Hamels, at his peak was significantly better than Shields.
    And he started out better
And he placed higher in Cy Young voting
    More times

Still it appeared to me that Hamels has dropped off more... of course he had farther to drop and still remain a solid #3+ SP

I'm not against Hamels just stating the facts that his 8-14 @ 3.60 was troubling and while he rebounded to 9-9 @ 2.46 it was still a decline from his prior 'stellar' performance

Meanwhile Shields recent 13-9 @ 3.15 followed by 14-8 @ 3.20 might indicate he's got more in the tank though he may never again reach 'stellar' performance. Maybe... maybe not.

    Still see Line #1..

i understand your point that the Dodgers would benefit from having either one and i agree.

however, we don't agree on the performance side and you going win/loss record on me pretty much solidifies that we won't be agreeing here. Hamels wasn't nearly as bad as you think he was in 2013. his numbers were better than Shields'.

but yea, i doubt we get any of these guys.

i think Scherzer goes back to Detroit.

i was thinking Boston for Hamels before his comments in a recent interview..now, i think he goes to the Cubs and they roll out Hamels and Lester.

and Shields ends up in Boston.

our FO probably lets Greinke walk next off-season and we finally land David Price or this guy..

reds ace cueto, who has lester/scherzer as comps, willing to negotiate with reds until opening day.

Nope I stand by my comment so we agree to disagree on functional and how to describe a lack of full functionality.
