Haha I didn't think you were being a douche. Gay, maybe.
The Brewers won 96 games, have the league MVP in their lineup and have deployed their pitching staff in a way that has worked all season. They have won 11 in a row. We may be deeper, more talented, etc etc...but being let down so many times by the Dodgers...I really don't feel like the favorites in this series. Many talking heads think our talent and depth will prevail over the Brewers but idk.
Hey, I get it, I do. As a once inveterate gambler, I often bet shit as the public did ... and lost it all most of the time. Most trends of the public on major sports events go badly for the public. That's why Las Vegas keeps those lights on all the time.
I bet the Bengals in SuperBowl XXIII, Denver is SB XXXII, and in World Series plays, I had the 1990 Reds and the 2003 Marlins. I all cases, my bookies were extremely happy to take my bets, as nary a bettor was taking either team.
I can't say that LA fits this scenario ... but if the public likes Milwaukee, that bodes poorly for them. Most of those ignorant mooks bet based on limited info anyway. Poeple are really stupid when it comes to sports gambling ... I should know.
Shiiit . . . . I made bread once, but I'm no baker. I made a bookcase once, but I'm no carpenter. But I blow ONE HOBO . . .
7 games and 6 different start times. Good luck remembering them. And game 3 on the West Coast with an earlier start time than games 1 and 6 in the Midwest. Speaking of games 1 and 6, both are on primetime on a Friday in Milwaukee... different start times.
Just remembered we will be enduring a 7 game series (worst case) with Joe Buck and John Smoltz. Sheeeeiiiit.
I thought Joe Davis did a really good job hiding his bias on the Fox telecasts. He is going to have a great career. I just wish someone would tell him not to hold the final syllable of his sentences for so long every damn time he speaks. His generic, rhythmic "announcers" voice needs to evolve and improve for me to be fully on board. He's too precise. However, he is capable of making memorable calls ("Absolute Madness" comes to mind) so I know he will evolve into a great broadcaster.
As far as color analysts (racist) go...Orel is pretty bad on our local telecasts, but at least he LOVES THE GAME. I cant say that about a lot of the guys who are working on a national level in the booth. Smoltz clearly hates the way baseball is played nowadays and is just a grumpy old man. Ron Darling is the same way. They need to start removing these guys from the booth if they want the sport to grow.
I'm tired of guys blaming analytics for everything and complaining about anything and everything on the air.
And while I love the statistical element and would like to see it implemented better, it's not 100 percent necessary to keep me engaged as long as the guys on screen love the game and aren't morons. David Ortiz, Frank Thomas and A-Rod with Burkhardt moderating is great because they're fun. Maybe not as stat driven as I like, but competent. Dontrelle Willis and Nick Swisher on the other hand, are morons. So you have to be fun and competent.
They do an ad campaign about making baseball fun, yet Joe Buck will be calling a boring play by play with grumpy analysts like Jon Smoltz blabbering on about stupid shit.
Oh, and I miss Vin. Bring back the one man booth! I miss having our announcer talk to us instead of the guy next to him.
Testify, honky cracka. You got my vote.
I don’t mind Buck honestly. There’s been times when he’s had great calls like the Boston wining game four or St. Louis keeping bf themselves alive for game six. He’s a bit boring but is perfectly serviceable as an announcer.
But I agree on Smoltz. HoF pitcher but god awful announcer. Stop complaining about how the game is played and call the game!
Agree with everything except I like Joe Buck, idk why
I have always liked your stuff on here, bro ... but this makes me uncomfortable. Do you also enjoy rape, poisoning, and kale? Because Joe Buck is the auditory equivalent of all three of those at once.
Et tu, MZA?
The other day I had the radio feed going with Chris Berman doing play-by-play and Sutcliffe adding color. "Boomer" is absolutrly horrible - how he gets these gigs is beyond me. His words slur together like a drunkard and on one play his call was, "Oooooooooh, great play by Camargo." Nothing more. I'm still waiting to find out exactly what Camargo did. Hopefully I won't have to endure him again in this next series. Sutcliffe, on the other hand, I've always found to be knowledgeable, personable, and articulate. Just wish they would pair him with someone else.
could it be its because you think that sly smirk and a wink is for you every time the guy finishes asking a question and sticks the mike in the other dudes face?
i mean it IS intoxicating
I think you are starting to catch on.
I don't hate Buck on a personal level like many do. He's actually a humble dude.
But he's not good enough for me to understand how he's ascended to such heights in his profession.
Calling the Superbowl, World Series, PGA Championships...if Fox had the NBA he'd be calling the finals.
He's just not that good. I'm not advocating for a screamer, but he's a robot.
Maybe it says more about modern sportscasting in general. idk.
Fox is strange to me in that they have 1 "voice" for their brand. Seems pretty antiquated. They've also been using the "NFL on FOX" theme across all sports. Baseball has no identity anymore. They call it brand consistency, I call it a lack of identity.
The MLB had a unique musical score, quirks, etc. Now it's just bland. Buck doesn't help. But they'll keep him because casual viewers don't care, it probably saves them money, and he's "good enough".
and yet you shop in old navy
I'm tired of this shit!
On an "old white guy" tangent, what you are saying here is a very nicely encapsulated redux of Allan Bloom's Closing of the American Mind
I re-read this a few years ago. Judas, how prophetic this guy was in 1987 ... he saw us 'dumbing down' analysis into bland summary, refusing to reward greatness for fear of alienating the hapless or talentless. Buck, as you say, isn't an evil man or even a buffoon. He's probably a decent guy. But he's no linguist, poet, orator, wit, nor engaging persona. In a world that needs complex flavors & varied textures, he's vanilla soft serve from AM/PM.
It's that hair, bro...awesome !
Smoltz is irrelevant to me, one way or the other, as are most announcers. I actually like to hear an old ballplayer mention the old ways. Just bcause it's newer, certainly doesn't mean it's better. Smoltz doesn't say it like Vin did, for sure, but he has a right to express his disdain for facets of the game he played for years that he thinks suck. None of us were down on the field.
There sure is a shitload of hatred here for pretty much everybody though, including our own. Lots of worry about seat colors, the crowd arriving late, Charlie Steiner, Orel, leaving early, attendance, PA systems, music choices, game times, etc. Really, does this all matter?
Maybe I'm too far away from it geographically, or generationally, or whatever...but waiting for this team to finally get there, imo, is the focus.
Although the parking seems outrageously overpriced, and a hot dog, etc. (and Yankee Stadium and Citi Field are no bargains, either, I assure you), you can still go and see the team.
For someone who can't, kinda difficult to fathom why all this other shit even matters.
