I always feel bad for Bills. Maybe it's his puppy dog face when he's getting shelled. Him and James have just never hit their potential. I don't know why. It's not odd by any stretch though. They aren't the first talented players (of any sport) who just never played to their talent.

Unfortunately, the window to trade him has long passed. He's a FA at the end of the year so you can't trade him for the longterm, and he's not good enough to trade him for the short term.

If and when Loney ends up on another team somehow he will be the hitter we always wanted him to be but with his new team. He will contend for the batting title, drive in over 100 runs and hit 25-30 HRs every season. Some other team will get to enjoy that. Not us. The only thing he is for the Dodgers is a huge disappointment, an easy out in the lineup and an embarrassment to solid Dodger 1st baseman of the past like Eric Karros and Steve Garvey. Big deal he can catch a short hop. Other 1st baseman can do that too.

Yup. He'll most likely kick our ass, but who cares. We need to get rid of him because he isn't going to do it for us. As a Dodger, James is done.

Fuck it, trade him to an AL team. Maybe they'll DH for him and let the pitcher hit.

A very good post. The risk reward of letting him go is much heavier on the risk side especially with no clear replacement in the system. Given time Van Slyke may minimize the risk and as you note his current trade value is minimal, if that were to increase the reasons for trading him would decrease. What could increase the likelyhood of him being traded is the increasing need for roster space on both the 25 and 40 man rosters. That puts Kennedy at the most risk with Loney and Rivera right now not all that far behind as position players and a couple of relief pitchers at possible risk if we add pitching or want to brink a minor league player up not on the roster.
