And if that's worst case scenario, mind you, Joc had a 129 OPS+ (2nd on the team) in 2016, that's pretty good.

Don't think comparing Bellinger to Joc is fair, Bellinger got started as a good contact/no power guy, then transformed into a high power/lower contact guy. He then found a way to maintain the power, but lessen the contact woes after a promotion to a more competitive/ tougher hitting environment. Pederson's problem is that he tended to flail open when he sold out for more power(something you saw glimpses of him fixing this year), but Bellinger has a much more compact swing and is quicker to the ball. I think the K rate will always be on the high end, but he has shown a great ability to adjust already and has performed above expectations at every promotion.

The system is now filled with "good character" guys, something that has been discussed when they have passed on arguably better players in the draft recently. What we are seeing is a drastic change in the MiLB levels due to the top guys that work incredibly hard at improving their weaknesses. Rios, Bellinger, Calhoun, De Leon and Stewart are great examples of this as they are all mentioned to be tireless workers that are all kinda pushed by someone else to improve every day. Bellinger is and has continued to show a remarkable ability to adjust and I think in his prime, he will see a BA in the .280+ range with a K rate around 20%, but I don't see the high 20's coming that Joc has.

Saw a report a while back that said Ruiz is the guy to watch in the high upside/2nd wave/2020-ish group

Yeah, Joc just had way more questions coming out in general, barely reached the Top 15-20 in MLB, IIRC.
Bellinger's more than likely already surpassed Joc in terms of acclaim and standing coming out, not even just in terms of polish at the plate.
Keeping an eye on that Perez fella in STL..he did not disappoint this year.
Lux had a run in Ogden, though, and didn't really disappoint either.

O’Koyea Dickson, lf, Dodgers. Dickson, a 12th-round pick in 2011 from Sonoma State, had by far his best pro season in 2016 and has carried that into winter ball in Mexico. In a semifinal playoff game Wednesday for Hermosillo, Dickson, 26, was 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs in a 7-2 win over Mexicali. The best-of-seven series is tied 3-3 with Game Seven Thursday night. Dickson has plus bat speed and a sound swing and it seems only a late-season quad injury kept him from making his major league debut.

He really did have a decent season. Too bad it's taken him so long to put it together. Maybe good winter ball numbers will make him attractive as a throw-in on a trade package that gets a deal done... who knows?

I agree, I think that is what he will have to be is a trade piece. He is apparently a guy without a position going forward.

Right. Unfortunately for him, he's in the wrong organization at this point in his career, but you'd think there's some team out there who could use him. And opening up LF/1B in Oklahoma City would be good for us.

Apparently he is below average in the field wherever it is that he plays. 6 errors in 244 innings at 1B last year is not great. It sounds like his only real spot is DH.

i'll defer to you guys who follow the prospects more closely

ESPN’s Keith Law ranks Dodgers farm system 5th
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 17 minutes ago

The Los Angeles Dodgers checked in at No. 5 on ESPN Keith Law’s 2017 ranking of the top farm systems in baseball. Los Angeles at this point last year boasted the second-best farm system in baseball per Law, but slipped to fifth in his 2016 midseason update.

The Atlanta Braves sit atop Law’s ranking, followed by the New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates. After the Dodgers are the Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox.

That the Dodgers still place in the top-half of Law’s ranking is impressive when taking into account the organization graduated the likes of Corey Seager and Julio Urias, and traded Jharel Cotton, Grant Holmes and Frankie Montas.

Cody Bellinger was named the Dodgers’ top prospect by Baseball America, though he was second to Yadier Alvarez in Baseball Prospectus’ ranking.

Alvarez leads a deep pool of pitching prospects that includes Walker Buehler, Jose De Leon, Chase De Jong, Jordan Sheffield and Brock Stewart, among others.

The Dodgers’ crop of position players is headlined by Bellinger, Willie Calhoun, Yusniel Diaz, Andrew Toles and Alex Verdugo.

What unfolds in the weeks leading up to Spring Training and Opening Day could affect the Dodgers’ standing, as De Leon has been mentioned in trade rumors throughout the offseason. Conversely, the organization is said to be staunchly opposed to trading Alvarez, Bellinger or Buehler.

De Leon was ranked the eight-best right-handed pitching prospect by MLB Pipeline. While other publications view Alvarez in high regard, he did not crack MLB Pipeline’s ranking, presumably in part due to a lack of professional experience.

I don't know enough about other team's farms to comment on the ranking. But we did graduate/trade a lot so it makes sense we'd slip a bit. What I took from this is that the NL West has 3 of the top 10 farms. Wonder how that makes the Gnats and Snakes feel?

That's definitely fair and great news for a system that has some guys who just need to show a little more this year to jump up the charts. Like if Alvarez and/or Buehler show last year was not a fluke, our stock would improve likely at mid season. We will be graduating more depth this year as likely De Leon, Stewart and Toles will probably accrue enough innings and both Bellinger and Verdugo could as well if the corners are poor. If that happens, I bet they drop in the 8-15 range next season unless something else miraculous happens down on the farm. Very hard to draft as low as we are and now be hampered by int'l spending rules to keep the farm atop that list.

The farm ranking there is fair enough.
The fact that LAD isn't selling their MLB level pieces away at any of these trade deadlines, and aren't getting any of these 3 and 4 prospect packages in return to help power them ( like the Yankees, Braves, Padres, WSox, etc.), but are still motoring along is impressive.

Bellinger named top 1B prospect by MLB Pipeline
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers was named the top first base prospect for the 2017 season by MLB Pipeline. Bellinger placed second on the publication’s list last year, finishing behind Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Josh Bell.

That was Bellinger’s first appearance on MLB Pipeline’s ranking of top Minor League first basemen since he was selected by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2013 Draft. The 21-year-old played all but three games last season with Double-A Tulsa.

Bellinger hit .263/.359/.484 with 17 doubles, 23 home runs and 65 RBI in 114 games for the Drillers. He was promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City last September, going 6-for-11 with three home runs and six RBI in three regular-season games.

The stay with OKC continued into the Pacific Coast League playoffs and PCL Championship. Bellinger batted .250/.364/.361 with one double, one home run, five RBI and seven walks in nine playoff games.

His 2016 campaign came to an end with a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League, where Bellinger batted .314/.424/.557 with eight doubles and three home runs in 20 games for the Glendale Desert Dogs.

Aside from offensive production, Bellinger offers defensive flexibility as in addition to playing first base, he logged time at all three outfield spots for the Drillers.

With the graduations of Corey Seager and Julio Urias, Bellinger has been anointed the Dodgers’ top prospect for the 2017 season in the eyes of Baseball America. He was ranked the Dodgers fifth-best prospect by Baseball America prior to last season.

Bellinger placed second behind Yadier Alvarez by Baseball Prospectus. Los Angeles reportedly received trade interest for their versatile first baseman, though turned clubs away.

The Dodgers are also said to be against trading Alvarez and Walker Buehler.
