Definitely a guilty pleasure. My classy wife (how classy can she really be ...?) caught me watching that a few years ago. I got the slow stare from her. She couldn't believe I liked this foul show. It wasn't this scene, but one like it, that she walked in on ...

was watching some old twilight zones just to see if i missed any
one i'm sure i had missed was season 5 episode 22, a piece called occurrence at owl creek bridge
Rod gives a narrative about the piece and how its from a different country iirc
not many words just a crazy tale
if you were ever a fan i'd be curious if you saw this one

That's my favorite Ambrose Bierce short story. I'll be teaching that in a few weeks. Brilliant.

Bierce originally wrote it as a Civil War era piece. A French filmmaker then made a silent short of it in NJ the 1930s. Serling may have been the fourth of fifth person to remake it.

watched "the cove" on the slaughter of dolphins and whales
i knew about the whales like we all did but had no idea how Japan see's things in regards to dolphins
the view them as competition for food and ultimately pests
this group, led by a guy that worked w the original flipper show, manage to get covert footage of whats going on
i know its 10 years old but i felt like i did watching elephants slaughtered for human reasons
i doubt much has changed in the last 10 years since its pretty hard to control what other countries do
really makes me sick inside and the last 20 minutes of covert footage has to make anyone sick

[QUOTE="LAdiablo, post since its pretty hard to control what other countries do

It sure is...actually, if we did a 180° on global warming here in the US, what could we possibly do to countries like China and India and their part in it all? Is the Pontius Pilate "handwashing" enough to do anything of importance in the grand scheme of things?
To me, it's the same with animals rights. We can be as we should be, and respect all animals as fellow residents of our earth...but if the Japanese don't feel that way, what can we do? It's not like they aren't aware of how we feel about it...they simply say " fuck you". Basically. It continues on and on.
    And that's.that.

Following up... Rod Serling did not produce an original version of this short story for the Twilight Zone. He actually got the rights to the French version that I was talking about initially, & he screened it as part of his own TV show. As I was re-watching that this week before I taught the story, I was so impressed. I don't think there has ever been a more perfect matching of short fiction and a short film in art history.

i really thought it wasn't shot in his style at all
should have gone back and listened to his narrative in the beginning but i was just captivated immediately and couldn't stop watching
truly stands out as a work of art and was the nugget i was looking for when i decided to skim through the original seasons

instantly incredible visual art in the first two minutes
would love to share this w mom (96 remember) do you think it would be appropriate?
i think there's a lot of hot sex stuff right?
unless the filming remains remarkable and the story is devastating i'll lose her

Your mom may take issue with the graphic sex scenes, but that's not for me to say. I know my mom wouldn't get past episode 1.

I really wanted to love Game of Thrones, and I tried to, but in the end, it doesn't do it for me. The layered plots and some great visuals aside, plus some top notch acting, still left me unimpressed. The stories just weren't that interesting to me. I was underwhelmed by the dependence on soft core porn as an expositional device. Season one literally spent a solid hour of screen time on gratuitous sex scenes ...

Yeah, I hear you. Why is that a bad thing? Maybe I'm getting too old for it, but I don't need to see people taking it doggie style complete with Christy Canyon moaning imitations just so I can get the backstory on the Lannisters. Just let the skilled actors do that instead. I don't need three Penthouse pets of the month in the foreground in a menage a trois.

Season 2 is ever more obvious in that aspect, while season 3 tried to sharpen the narrative a bit, but I lost interest. John Snow's arc interested me, but his was the only real appeal to keep watching, and that proved insufficient.

I'm aware things improved measurably in seasons 4-6 but I didn't have time for it. Maybe in a year or so, after I'm caught up on the other ten shows I'm trying to watch simultaneously.

ty i was looking at that 9.5 and all the glowing things being said by virtually everyone and wondering if i would be let down
watched only a few minutes thinking visually it was glorious and wanting to share it but no way mom and i are watching it together
your review is likely going to match mine but i'll give it a shot anyway
don't really need gratuitous sex scenes either and if the stories aren't strong i'm going to lose interest as well

The gratuitous sex and the ultra violence make GOT one of the worst series in TV history.

I can't fucking wait until it returns.

    :laff:

I hope you know I'm no prude, brother. But the show employs "sexposition" for one reason and one only - they needed to pull in the older male demographic, and they did that with the show and they have kept it that way. The producers knew this wasn't going to have the older white male demo appeal of SOPRANOS, DEADWOOD, or THE WIRE, nor would it have the female market appeal of SEX & THE CITY. Even The Wire and Deadwood had some gratuitous moments, to be fair, but anyway. HBO also realized that WEEDS and DEXTER on Showtime tapped into the dark market of flawed heroes that had more female viewers tuning in than males, and stole some subscribers with their programming, as did AMC with WALKING DEAD and BREAKING BAD.

I'm also prejudiced against George RR Martin. He has penned some good short fiction, and as a publisher himself, he has done some good work. For 20 years, he realized that nobody bought that stuff anymore though, and while he had industry credibility, he wasn't famous yet. Meanwhile, he loved Tolkien so he went for the LotR approach to epic fantasy. But because he isn't a learned nor as talented as Tolkien (few are - the guy is arguably the most educated author in English speaking history, matched maybe by CS Lewis or Tennyson), he had to sex up his prose to make it standout. Pair that up with HBO's growing focus on the drama series after Sopranos tore the industry a new ass in the early Zeroes, and we have GofT setting the new standard for "must see TV."

Good on him for finding his niche. I'm just an English teacher who hasn't been published, so I guess I'm bitter.

i agree w most of this and actually didn't make it through the first episode
i know i'm in the minority since its 9.5 but its not the first time that happened
the girl is beautiful for sure but a swashbuckling dwarf is pretty far fetched as well, especially in those times
oh and please don't mention walking dead and breaking bad in the same sentence lol
walking dead is one of the lamest shows in history without the zombies and bb was a masterpiece

My mistake - didn't mean to compare those two shows. They aren't equal and yes, BB is a masterpiece. But AMC programming got several HBO execs axed when it was determined that HBO passed on both of those programs. AMC built their appeal on those two shows, plus Mad Men.

Anyway, yeah, a badass dwarf? He's a skilled actor, but the concept is lame in my opinion.
