This is gonna be one of those things where we can't really believe what we hear, just have to wait and see where he ends up.
This is definitely (a) Maddon not wanting to have to learn and build a relationship with a new GM, and (b) realizing that DBB is on a very short leash with Friedman. Maddon can take a break and wait for the opportunity to develop.
Miami should go ahead and get their Stanton extension talks started so he can reject them and basically opt out of his time there too. that way we can get this thing REALLY rolling. because that's what happened here with Maddon. Friedman made it known that they would be fine with Mattingly managing next year and basically killed all the " trade for Maddon " stuff and Tampa realized they'd get nothing for a manager with his eye on eventually getting big money in LA. so they went to Maddon about an extension and he said " no ". game over.
Doesn't look like he's coming guys @Ken_Rosenthal: Source: Maddon NOT heading to #Dodgers. @dylanohernandez: Andrew Friedman: Don Mattingly will manage the #Dodgers next season. Joe Maddon's availability won't change that.
this is LAD money muscle at it's finest. if the NBA had no salary cap..the Lakers might be doing the same. just muscling opposing franchises out of their best pieces.
What's he gonna say? "Yeah, we're in talks with Joe, we'll see what happens." Only to have Mattingly resign and Maddon go elsewhere. I tend to agree, but don't take it as fact.
i don't believe it for 1 sec. i don't think they'd let Mattingly manage with Maddon rumors hanging over his head all year..probably leaks to be fair to Mattingly and let him have some leverage in finding a comfy spot somewhere else.
i agree with the former..not so much the latter. you can't just come out and say " oh Maddon's done in Tampa..ok, Donnie's fired then. " they're more than likely trying to be 1st class about the situation, come out looking professional and give Mattingly a fair send off. this news is just too new..i give it a few days. Tuesday. Mattingly has friends in the clubhouse..some that they may actually wanna keep..you have to show Mattingly some respect on the way out and not rub his guys the wrong way. we don't like Mattingly as a manager, but we all have to agree that he's a good guy.
@THEREAL_DV: 1 thing that hasn't changed from day Friedman was hired to today is the backing Don Mattingly has from Mark Walter. #Dodgers God what the fuck does Mark Walter know??
Maddon and Friedman are such good friends..i don't think Maddon sees these reports about Mattingly staying and runs and signs somewhere else. what's more probable is that Maddon already knew Friedman would take this public stance and continue to back Mattingly for a little while longer and show him some respect because they probably talked about such. wouldn't surprise me one bit.
@JeffPassan: Dodgers are indeed out on Joe Maddon, as @Ken_Rosenthal said. Not happening. Period. Cubs and Mets considered by friends to be favorites.
They hired Drew for a reason. Let him Do his job. Everyone wants their guy and Dum Dum is NOT his guy. Ned and Dum Dum. The last of the McLoan curse.
so none of these sources had inklings that this might happen yesterday and now all of a sudden all these MLB insiders have sources lined up..i smell the Twitter hit train
