I do think Kemp thought he could make that out, which is part of the problem. He has to distinguish what he can and can not do. It's like Dee Gordon trying to go for Home Runs.. Dee maybe thinks he can hit a HR but it's stupid for him to try cause he can't most of the time because thats what his abilities limit. Kemp can't make that play and he needs to know it for the sake of his health/the team... The point we are missing also is that instead of Kemp trying to make that play by jumping into a wall, he should work on his jumps off the bat to avoid making it so close. It's like when Juan Rivera dives for a ball yeah it looks cool but if he had a better jump/speed it's a normal play. And yeah, he probably doesn't think about the whole outcome but he has to realize what he can and can not do. Luis Cruz and Hanley don't just jump into the stands on every foul ball cause they know when they can or can't make the catch, same logic with Kemp. Also, he needs to learn the context of the game. That risk is not worth it in the bottom of the 1st at Coors field. If it's Game 1 of the NLDS, late innings, I give some understanding. But not in sucha pointless time. And it is a cool thing to see someone go all out, but in the end it doesn't really matter. Justin Sellers goes all out but I'd take Hanleys lazy ass over Sellers a million times cause what matters more than running into things is using your extreme talent to play the best baseball you can. And I don't think it's fair to see that if Kemp doesn't go all out he becomes Abreu or Anderson. That's taking the absolute extreme, saying if he can't play "hard" he is the complete opposite. There is a middle ground. He can run the bases hard and play aggressive baseball without being reckless, and he wouldn't be a "Bobby Abreu".
It's not that anyone wants Kemp to be a lazy ass or super cautious or anything, just it'd be nice for him to not risk extreme injury on somehing with minimal positive results and to instead give good effort on his abilities and things that make a difference without huge risk.
Matt needs to use a bit more prudence on the field. Any day he's not in the lineup hurts the team. That's what we're trying to get him to realize. He came back too soon from his initial injury this year, re-aggravated it, and missed 50-or-so games. I've told Donny, the coaches and especially the medical staff that they are not to allow him to come back too soon. Especially now with Hanley and Adrian to help Andre hold down the fort in his absence.
well said especially the part about the staff matt is the star but they need to enforce their authority it's not about him it's about the team and like you said him not in the lineup hurts the team
