Yoshihisa Hirano candidate for Dodgers bullpen
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

In the time leading up to the Winter Meetings, the Los Angeles Dodgers remained in the picture for a potential trade for Giancarlo Stanton, or possible signing of Shohei Ohtani. Because of luxury tax concerns, the latter always seemed more probable.

But Ohtani stunned the baseball world by agreeing to a contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. That left Stanton as the next domino who was expected to fall, and that came on the first day of the Winter Meetings as he was traded to the New York Yankees.

Throughout the past week, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi maintained the club was in strong standing and not in desperate need of new additions.

They also agreed on the focal point lying with the bullpen, which annually is a concern and priority for Friedman. Brandon Morrow, a key contributor this past season, moved on as he agreed to a two-year contract with the Chicago Cubs.

As the Dodgers look to fill out the final spots in their bullpen, one option is Yoshihisa Hirano, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports:

    Tim Brown ✔@TBrownYahoo
Dodgers appear to be targeting Japanese right-hander
Yoshihisa Hirano for bullpen help. 33-yr-old had a 2.67
ERA in 58 games for Orix last season.
    10:19 PM - Dec 14, 2017

In 11 seasons with the Orix Buffaloes, Hirano went 48-69 with 156 saves, a 3.10 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He set a career high with 40 saves in 2014, but only recorded 12 the following year, 31 in 2016, and 29 this season.

Hirano’s strikeouts per nine innings have declined in each of the past two seasons — 8.4 and 7.4, respectively — since tying a career-best mark at 11.3 in 2015. Hirano worked as a starting pitcher in the first three seasons of his career, but struggled in the role.

Hirano went 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA, 0.56 WHIP and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings across six games in this year’s World Baseball Classic. He faced Team USA in the semifinal at Dodger Stadium, and struck out Nolan Arenado swinging, the only batter faced.

Because of his age, Hirano will turn 34 years old in March, and 11 years of experience, he’s not subject to international bonus pools. Meaning, the Dodgers aren’t limited to offering a maximum of a $300,000 signing bonus as they were with Ohtani.

Another difference between the two is, Hirano is an international free agent. Therefore, a posting fee is not required to be paid to Orix.

Machado to (insert team here) seems to gaining momentum and O's want it to happen in the 24 - 36 hours but it's only for next year. He'll go free agent, odd to trade for a rental even as great as Manny.

Yes, but not if the guy becomes the link to the promised land for you...like Darvish was supposed to be for us I guess.

With those recent numbers this guy has produced, can you fathom why they are actually seriously considering this guy? And we wondering why we have so much dead weight around our necks.
Just get a 34 year old has been because he's cheap? Wow...

Hard as it is to deal with Angelos, that FO and Angelos would be letting down Showalter, Adam Jones, Chris Davis and their other vets if they allowed Machado to walk without getting as much as they can for him in a trade, so this would seem to be the right move for the O's. Supposedly, 10+ teams have made offers for Machado, so a nice sized pool of teams to maybe get a bit of a bidding war going. LAD may have heard about all the interested teams and that whole scene and decided to steer clear of a bidding war for a rental guy. Under normal rental circumstances, with a smaller pool of interested teams, the O's and LAD would make for a solid match trade wise. Similar to LAD and Tampa last year..Tampa willing to move a valuable piece to their puzzle, but weren't in a full scale rebuild at the time, so the same sort of applies here since the O's don't want to tear it all down either. They also have the payroll flexibility to take on some of LAD's short term $ guys like Kazmir and McCarthy to ease LAD's immediate tax burden, and they need as much ML ready pitching as they can get their hands on as well. But it looks like some of these teams that have been selling off their top players and adding big spec hauls over the last year are willing to pay up for a chance to convince Machado to stay after next year. Hopefully, he stays out of the NL.

Moneyball scout meeting scene with one small exception... We are not the last dog at the bowl below 50 feet of crap, we're he richest team in all of baseball. Preach it, "If we try to compete with the Yankees in here we will lose to the Yankees out there". Yeah, let's see what Stanton does "out there". What a crock of shit the FUCKTARDS have created. We had our window and collectively fucked it up like it was amateur hour. Cardinals, Yankees and Cubs get better (so far) while the shit signings haunt the fuck out of us.

Does anybody really think these guys are going to use all this freed up money next year to go after someone like Harper? Drink the $25 Kool-Aid out at the park so Todd Boehly and his pals can get richer.

Exactly what AF should say to Kershaw when Kershaw opts out.
No more of this 35M a year or whatever it is for a guy who can't hold 3+ run leads in October

Rut roh the Padres acquired Freddy Galvis today and they are considered favorites to sign Hosmer. Still short on talent and depth compared to us but they are catching up on the Gnats and even the D-Backs due to all their rumors about trading Corbin/Greinke/Drury and losing 39 saves. Freaking Anals signing Cozart as well as getting a new mascot Cozart's mule, Votto must not be happy. Feeling completely left out BUT still confident about our team.

If the Phillies turn around and deal Hoskins for Machado (which is being speculated), that would be one hell of a thing. He is BAD in the OF and having both him and Santana is a little confusing.
