    • ESPN's Alden González reported Monday the Los Angeles Dodgers are trading pitcher Victor Gonzalez and middle infielder Jorbit Vivas to the New York Yankees for infield prospect Trey Sweeney. What the deal achieved is opening two spots on the active roster for Shohei Ohtani and Joe Kelly.

    LOL wut

    Exclusive
    @TheAthletic
    : Shohei Ohtani will defer $68 million per year of his $70 million annual salary over the course of his 10-year, $700 million deal with the Dodgers, allowing the team to keep spending, according to a person briefed on the terms.

    Wow, I thought it'd be 10 or 20 mill, not 68. Seriously, I question if that's accurate. Assuming it is, that's huge for the team now and they should definitely be all over the Yamamoto opportunity and others, this year and going forward. Of course the downside is that we'll be paying Ohtani for probably the next 50 years.

    It shouldn't be downplayed how much Ohtani is giving up in order to not hamstring the team during his time there. Yes, he still will get paid 700 big ones so nobody will feel sorry for him, but anyone who understands economics, or more specifically future value of money vs present value, will realize in "real" terms (think "value hedged for inflation") the 700 mill that he gets paid structured in this way is worth substantially less than 700 million paid over ten years. The best way to conceptualize this is that every million dollars he gets paid, say, 30 years from now will be able to purchase significantly less than it would if that same million dollars was paid in 2024. Again, nobody's going to shed tears for him, but it's absolutely not a meaningless sacrifice on his part.

    the initial reporting when he announced the deal was it was more than half so I was expecting like 400 mil, not 680. People are going to lose their mind over this.

    Not as bad as it all seems, I guess.
    And my kid told me Ohtani is worth at least $35M to the Dodgers per year because of money paid by Japan and others who televise his games because of national pride and his popularity, etc.
    Add. it all up, and now it seems like a bargain ! Maybe ?

    As a die- hard pessimist, I'm willing to accept and acquiesce to the fact we may probably get into the second round of the playoffs now. Yeehah!

    I can't even go that far bz. Dodger brass is trying to Davey-proof the lineup, but that's a fool's errand. At least it'll keep their turnstiles moving.

    The Los Angeles Dodgers are "aggressively" pursuing Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency, according to Russell Dorsey of Bally Sports.

    After Shohei Ohtani will reportedly defer $680 million of his $700 million contract until the end of his 10-year deal, the Dodgers have much more financial flexibility (per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic). The deferred money will be paid to the two-way superstar without interest from 2034 through 2043.

    Yamamoto is expected to meet with Los Angeles "later this week," via Dorsey.

    “So, yes, the Dodgers certainly will be in the bidding for Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, whose suitors include the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and even the Blue Jays, who would hate to be spurned twice. Adding him and Ohtani isn’t out of the question. By Game 1 of the 2024 season, which sees the Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres in Seoul, South Korea, Yamamoto could be the starting pitcher, with Ohtani hitting behind Betts and Freeman. It would be must-watch TV, whether in the United States or abroad.”

    Shōta Imanaga, winning pitcher in the WBC gold medal game, is drawing broad interest from @MLB clubs, including the Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox, and Cubs. Some in the industry believe he could receive an AAV in the $20 million range.

    I firmly believe the Dodgers will sign one of the two japanese pitchers then trade for a Glasnow or Cease
