Honestly have no clue why we gave so much money to guys the Dodgers hardly consider potential contributors. There's no spot for Guerrero and Arruba can't hit. Never hear about either of them. Yet we spent millions on them. ???
I think Guerrero should have as much shot to win the 2B job as Dee. I could certainly see them platoon while Guerrero also spells 3rd/LF. Arrub will be definitely used, just not sure about how much. really depends on internal reports on him. wish he was playing at the AFL so we could get some updates
I think Erisbel will be useful, even as a backup. We know how much depth is important and a backup shortstop becomes your starter in the blink of an eye guerrero I don't know right now. They seem as if they're not sure which position he can handle defensively which is scary, and he's an age where you can't hope for the future. He's untradeable so hopefully he at least hits lefties well and can play 2B. Him only playing LF would suck
Keep in mind that both were signed when the Dodgers middle infield was a riddle no one knew the answer to. (<---Flagrant grammatical error). Hanley's health and an open position at 2nd with no clear heir contributed to signings that at the time were thought to provide depth and options. Subsequent events (ear biting and maturity issues) made them less of an option while improved play from Dee made them less necessary. It's easy to look at the present situation and ask "why" but if you go back to the time they were signed it becomes more clear. And who knows, part of it may have just been the Guggen Gods wanting to appease the fans by showing they would spend on the international FA market. A little showmanship, if you will.
I posted this in the beginning , at the inception of these two. I was told basically they were phenomonal ballplayers, and it was a great move. Might have been Puig fever...I sure don't see a sniff of greatness with either of this duo. Then again, what I've seen of Zach Lee leaves me scratching my head. What's the rumpus here also?
What I see about Guerrero was the fight set him back. He was playing well and close to earning a call up until his teammate chose to have a pre-post game snack on his ear. I think he can be an every day middle infielder or even win the SS job in the Spring if given the chance. They know he can play the position and he was hitting until the fight. Get him away from 2B and put him back at SS. As for the Cuban name crisis. I see another Chin Lung-Hu, Rafael Bournigal, or Cesar Izturis situation.
I don't know what would lead you to believe that their will be any competition for 2B time in 2015 as long as Gordon is around.
Why did we sign them at such a high cost? Competition and we were for shit in minor league depth at SS and 2nd. Dee was a bust previously and Turner had hit for pop with the Mets and everyone was wondering why the heck we signed him. Hanley was injury prone. What else was there and free agents were at what cost? At the end of the 2013 season our position player depth was non existent.
Just because Zaidi and Friedman are in the front office doesn't mean money is suddenly the driving factor for who will play, this isn't Oakland or Tampa.
I hope that they don't start cutting payroll just for the sake of cutting payroll. Dumping an outfielder and playing it smart on Hanley are good ideas. BUT I hope we don't see any situations where we elect not to improve because of this desire to trim payroll. Stan said no moves are cost prohibited and I believe that's still true. Hopefully.
