I hate to be a debbie downer, but you really think we'll acquire a young stud like Stanton? Doesn't seem in our nature or like something Colletti can do without trading the entire farm. He's exactly what we need and have needed for years in the middle of our lineup so it won't happen.

Yes, you were. Here are your words.

don't even tell me they shouldn't be offering up Puig, Pederson and/or Seager for Stanton this winter.

That little 3 letter word in bold means you're giving up all 3 if necessary. You can tell me that's not what you meant, but that is EXACTLY what you said.

You've never been more wrong. Didn't you pay attention to what DIDN'T happen at the trade deadline? Like why we DIDN'T get Price? Because they wanted our top prospects and Ned (under orders from Stan) turned around and walked away. I don't have a problem with giving up one big chip along with 2nd tier prospects and cash but giving up two major players is just stupid. Like I said, you don't solve problems by creating more holes. And the Cubs aren't going to do it either. Theo has worked too hard to put them in the position they are in and he's not about to screw it up by giving up too much for one player.

There, you just gave yourself the best reason why none of this is going to happen. The Cubs will do the same as the Dodgers, offer one big prospect and several small ones, along with a boat load of cash. Miami will cave, because THEY can't wait until he turns FA because they will lose all their bargaining power. And the Dodgers and Cubs and the rest of MLB know it too.

The Cubs won't do that because they actually have a GM with a brain. Theo isn't giving up both of those guys.

that's only the way it reads there, but like i explained thereafter, if they have to give up both Puig and Pederson for Stanton they need to do it. this isn't the 1st time we've discussed such..had this discussion in the rumors section not 2 even weeks ago.

sure, i paid attention..they didn't give up any of their top farm guys for a near 30 year old arm. now, what does that have to do with 24yr old Giancarlo Michael Stanton who's an MVP caliber everyday player? Price and Stanton are two different animals. my old friend, i think YOU have never been more wrong.

Miami doesn't have to wait until free agency..they just have to wait until they see the offer they like and the Cubs and Dodgers won't be making the same level offer and just letting Stanton slide off to the other team. they're going to better their offers to a point and try to come away with his services. the Cubs have 3 young shortstops in Castro, Baez and Russell..it'd be no sweat off their back to throw one of them in to land a MVP caliber producer/outfielder/face of the franchise..they're rebuilding their brand. if Stanton weren't 24, maybe you'd have a point.

yea, i do. right now we're the favorites to land him " if he makes it to free agency "..which i highly doubt will happen because i'm pretty sure he's gonna get paid this winter, long before free agency. but it just goes to show that not everybody can afford to rip off 200+ million to pay him. it's us, the Cubs, the Red Sox..basically all of the major market teams. reports have said that the Marlins will open discussions by asking for at least 2 top tier prospects. i don't think that would pertain to us because we have Puig and he's 23yrs old and might still be on our farm (or a September call-up) if our older outfielders weren't battling injuries last year. but Puig's status, contract and major league level ability would probably be key to Stanton conversations, so if he's involved i doubt anyone's giving up the entire farm. Puig, being arguably the best Cuban player of note in MLB, would mean a ton in Miami.

and i'll tell you what..i'd give up Pederson before i gave up Seager or Urias. just saying.

I new which Baez you were speaking of. We have enough Mendoza line hitters. Power can come from elsewhere. I think Guerrero is the real deal. I would trade Chinchilla before I'd even think of trading the Pig.

I gotcha. I read it again. My mistake. But I would do a package that included Kemp before I'd trade Puig.

i think some of us might agree that Kemp should go before Puig, however, what do the Marlins get out of it? what i mean is Kemp's about to turn 30. they'd definitely take the Cubs' package of young players over a Kemp offer.

and i haven't even mentioned the young players that the Red Sox have..they're rumored to be interested in Stanton as well.

    AND means both.

What part of that don't you understand?:dizzy3:

The point is they didn't give up any of their top farm guys...period. IF they do give up a top prospect, I'm willing to bet it will be one and only one. I'm willing to bet the Cubs have a similar frame of mind. Both teams are building a foundation from within their own organization. Jeopardizing that at this point in the process would be counterproductive. Once you have established depth of talent at all positions, then you start thinking about giving multiple blue chip guys in a deal for a guy like Stanton. Until that time, you're just trading one problem for another. I don't care how good the player it doesn't make sense to create a hole to acquire him, unless you are ready to fill that hole from within.

and what does " or " mean?

pretty sure you get the point..if you wanna keep arguing about a point i've built on many times since that initial post, go ahead..be as frivolous as you need be.

no, that was the FAIL of a point you were trying to prove by mentioning their talks with Tampa regarding Price, but none of that has anything to do with Stanton. you're in the minority in terms of your stance on " not giving up Puig and Pederson for Stanton. " i'm just saying.

the Cubs are ready to spend money..same as the Dodgers when they kicked off their rebuilding effort post-McCourt. yes, both are building a foundation from within, but as you can see the Dodgers haven't used 1 avenue in their rebuild..they haven't been shy about spending on immediate help to re-establish their brand. that's the same thing Cubs are looking to do at this point. they have money to spend and will probably chase Lester or Hamels as well. they already have the best young talent on the doorstep of MLB..they're now looking for a big splash signing or two to bolster what they have and continue to rebuild the brand. a 24 year old Stanton helps with that rebuild. neither organization is looking to be cheap. you want cheap..start talking Houston Astros.

like i told Doyer..Puig doesn't count as a prospect anymore, so by those standards no, the Dodgers shouldn't have to give up more than 1 top prospect. and we're just talking Cubs..not even talking Red Sox or even Seattle and other large market teams who may have interest in Stanton. wherever he goes, if that team is giving up considerable pieces to get him in what's likely to be a bidding war, they're gonna want him to agree to an extension the minute he touches down. there's only 1 way that the Dodgers give up " Pederson and lower level prospects " and end up with Stanton and that's if Stanton himself or his agent tells other teams that he won't sign long term with them and those teams back out. it's the same reason why Price was moved for so little in compensation..because Price himself is eyeing Dodgers as a free agent. players/agents understand how much money the Dodgers have, the kind of opportunities that are in LA and the kind of team the Dodgers can field. it's a perfect situation. for Stanton, it's even better because you add " hometown " to that mix.

however, if the Cubs, Red Sox, Mariners, or anybody else is waving a 200M dollar contract in his face before he even takes another regular season swing..for obvious reasons, that's tough to pass up.
