That outfit Puig has on makes him look 30 lbs heavier, 5 ft tall, and with no neck.

    Don't like the look

So the Dodgers have had a prospect named in the Top 10 for 3 of the 4 positions, but no Catcher as Austin Barnes fell from 6 or 7 out of the Top 10. That is shocking to me as he is regarded as one of the better defensive catchers in the minors, while also being a solid bat for the position. Wonder if his age has become a factor as he hasn't played enough to lose prospect status. He's not going to be a star, but his bat and glove are a solid combination for a catcher.

    i think that's exactly it
    as time goes by
if they guy doesn't progress/make it to the bigs
    he's essentially walking in place
    and thus losing status

I'd understand that more here if he wasn't blocked by two really good catchers ahead of him. He still has a solid starter upside, so I am not worried overall. Just another thing fans will use to freak out about now that he is not considered a top prospect for his position.

let me ask you something [because i don't know]
is his status based on the team he's on?
i.e. is his ranking based on where he is with the dodgers?
and would he perhaps be ranked higher if he were with an organization with no catchers ahead of him?

If Ellis gets hurt and lets say Barnes is unavailable as well, who's next?
    Zarraga?

It doesn't matter where he is ranked in the Dodgers system, just where they see him as a top prospect for his position. I think the way it affects him is that he has only had a really small taste of the big leagues with the Dodgers, but most other clubs would have called him up by now. It is just is a bit puzzling to me as he has hit at every level that he has been at (outside of 37 MLB PA's, where he still had a .361 OBP) and his D has gotten some very high marks lately, though Callis says he has no tools that stand out. Not sure if Callis just doesn't like him or what. Badler had him as a Cervelli comp, which if that is the case with his bat, sign me up, plus Barnes is much more athletic and a better fielder from all accounts. It may just be that he is likely stuck as a backup for at least another year or two.

Didn't Barnes start out at a different position? I thought I read that somewhere, if so that's why he's aging in the minors as he gets experience.

Not sure about the position thing but he came from another organization which can slow his rise to the majors. I'm pretty sure AJ will retire at the end of this year so I'm sure he'll be the back-up in 2017.

He was at 2B his first year, then he moved primarily to catcher, but was still used heavily in a utility tupe roles around the IF. This year he only played catcher in MiLB. Man, I am going through the top 10 and hardly any of these guys are all that impressive with a lot of holes. I think Barnes has just aged out and his ceiling is not as high as some of these guys, but it sure seems like his floor is better than a good bit of them.

Seager ranked Top-10 SS by MLBN's Kenny and Ripken
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 26 minutes ago

Entering last season the Los Angeles Dodgers were in the tricky position of needing to fill the void left at shortstop after Hanley Ramirez signed with the Boston Red Sox without blocking the rise of Corey Seager.

Los Angeles wound up trading for Jimmy Rollins, who met one criteria as he was in the final year of his contract, but the veteran also struggled at the plate.

Seager was promoted from Triple-A last September and he took advantage of Rollins being sidelined with a sprained right index finger.

Behind a hot start to his Major-League career, the 21-year-old prospect took hold of the starting job at shortstop over the final month of the regular season.

Seager then became the youngest position player to start a postseason game in franchise history when he was penciled in the lineup for Game 1 against the New York Mets in the 2015 National League Division Series.

With Rollins now a free agent and seemingly a lock not to be re-signed, the expectation holds Seager will be the Dodgers starting shortstop come Opening Day.

While he wasn’t ranked a top-10 player at his position by MLB Network’s The Shredder, he was ranked the No. 7 shortstop entering the 2016 season by Brian Kenny and No. 8 by Bill Ripken.

Mike Petriello also has Seager as the seventh-best shortstop at present time, but believes a move to third base is to come:

“I don’t think he’s going to be the long-term shortstop. But, if we’re looking at him for this year or next year, he’s probably good enough to stick there. I have him at No. 7, although I believe in the bat and eventually he’s going to be a third baseman.”

Both Kenny and Ripken added they wouldn’t be surprised if Seager was ranked the No. 1 shortstop heading into the 2017 season.

In 27 games with the Dodgers, Seager hit a blistering .337/.425/.561 with four home runs, eight doubles, 17 RBIs, a .421 wOBA and 175 wRC+. He began last season with Double-A Tulsa, then joined Triple-A Oklahoma City on May 1.

Complete rankings of the top 10 shortstops right now:

Micah Johnson ranked #7 2B by MLB Pipeline
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

Under team president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman the Los Angeles Dodgers have carefully protected their crop of prospects while simultaneously focusing on adding to the farm system.

Such was the case in a three-team trade last December with the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox that netted the Dodgers Micah Johnson, Frankie Montas and Trayce Thompson.

Los Angeles sent Jose Peraza and Scott Schebler to the Reds in the prospect-heavy trade.

Given some of the uncertainty the Dodgers faced at second base at the time, it wasn’t beyond reason to believe Johnson could play a role for the club as early as this season.

However, the Dodgers have since re-signed Chase Utley, who with Kiké Hernandez is expected to handle second-base duties.

Where Johnson begins the season is still to be determined, but he’ll do so as the No. 7 Minor-League second baseman, via Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com:

    7. Micah Johnson, Dodgers
Don’t use Johnson’s brief trial as the White Sox’s regular second baseman as a measure of who he can be in the big leagues. He may never be more than an adequate defender, but he can hit, he can get on base and he can run, as evidenced by his .301 average, .368 OBP and 153 stolen bases in 385 Minor League games. Perhaps the change of scenery in Los Angeles, courtesy of the three-team trade that brought Todd Frazier from the Reds to Chicago, will help.

Johnson spent 36 games up with the White Sox last season, batting .230/.306/.270 with nine walks and 30 strikeouts in 114 plate appearances. He was ranked the No. 2 overall second baseman in the Minors entering 2015.

Peraza, who appeared in seven games with the Dodgers last season, is ranked No. 2 after being listed as the top player at his position last year. Yoan Moncada of the Boston Red Sox is this year’s No. 1 second baseman in the Minors.

Johnson becomes the latest in a string of prospects to be ranked highly by MLBPipeline.com. Jose De Leon is ranked the fifth-best right-handed prospect, Julio Urias the top left-handed prospect and Cody Bellinger the No. 8 first baseman in the Minors.

Bellinger, De Leon and Urias were among the 16 players extended a non-roster invite to Spring Training on Monday.

I don't understand the Shredder. They say it's computer based but Seager already projects as one of the better shortstops I'm baseball next year.

Even baseball reference projects Seager to have better splits than Carlos Correa
    The position isn't terribly strong
