1B isn't a platoon spot. Adrian Gonzalez is an everyday player, and if they said they want to give him more rest, it still means he will start 140 games. At most he will get one game off per week. I think that gives SVS the advantage for a bench spot. But Utley and Turner can also play 1B.

Ethier will play 1B before Trayce, and Ethier won't play 1B.

1B could be a platoon situation, actually. Not a strict platoon, but Adrian has had three consecutive abysmal years against LH pitching...I can see him getting a lot of time off against them going forward. 67 wRC+ last year against LHP and an 85 wRC+ combined against lefties over the last 3 seasons. I read on Dodgers Digest that his slash over the last 3 years is .247/.300/.357 against lefties. That's horrible. If SVS is mashing southpaws, Gonzo should ride pine.

I know platooning sounds scary, but he's in decline and doesn't hasn't hit lefties in a long time.

Play him 130 games. Maximize what he has left.

He can mow the outfield grass is he gets bored. :kickmexican: :wowracist:

This FO office likes players that are versatile.
Trayce would become much more valuable if he was both an OF and 1B lefties hitter.
It does no help to the team to bench him for Turner or Utley when neither of those two can hit lefties any better than Trayce play 1B.
It will be a glaring hole on the roster that will be exploited by other managers.
Like the hole that Turner is becoming versus lefties.
    last year .209 .303 .337
    year before .245 .336 .409

Obviously I don't think that Trayce is going to be taking groundballs at 1B but there is no reason why he shouldn't.
He is tall and maybe injury prone in the OF. Playing a serviceable 1B may actually help extend his fledgling career and get in the regular game rotation.
Sure eventually Bellinger will be ready but in the meantime we are stuck with a lot of black holes against lefties.
    Joc this year: .125 .250 .219
    Joc year before: .216 .295 .397

With Turner and Joc the trend vs lefties is getting dramatically worse.
Its just as bad with Ethier. Hopefully Gonzales bounces back against lefties this year. He has some decent and some good years against lefties even over the more recent past.
It would be nice if Trayce, or Bellinger could play 3B :D
Versatility, the ability to kinda play all 7 field positions in a diamond and sorta hit lefties and sometimes mash home runs is why Kike probably will be on in the regular game rotation.

Right now its probably Franklin Gutierrez, Austin Barnes, Andre Ethier, and Kike. With guys like Chris Taylor, SVS, or Trayce only getting run when the team goes with the nickel.
Franklin will cover up LF for Ethier/Toles, but Kike will have to hit for Joc. And this is where Austin Barnes will prove his worth if he can do a decent job playing 3B and hitting for Turner vs left handers some nights.
Grandal should maybe play more 1B.

Wow...The SVS suckitude level is through the roof here...Didn't t he have a fairly serious injury he's trying to come back from? Idk...Maybe he does suck now, and I don't get it. Wonder why they didn't off him; maybe he is being set up for trade? Odd to be in the FO camp for me, but genius is as genius does...Eh, Forest?
Reminds me a bit of that guy AJ, who at one time was written about on here like Chuck Norris. Then, when the curtain of hatred fell...It fell very hard. It seems Agon is scheduled for much the same, as the march of time erodes his talents, and the shift dilutes his BA by about 20 or so points.
Guy still is one of the best picking throws I've ever seen. Almost single-handed handedly makes the LA IF one of the best there is.
Should be a very creative season with the Adrian dissfest with Bellinger lurking in the shadows...or sunlight.
My tuppence: makes Scioscia look like Usain Bolt.

Gonzalez has been a great Dodger, but his range sucks, his baserunning is all-world bad, and his power is in steady decline. This will most likely be an ugly year for him as much as I hate to say it.

In his first Cactus League outing, Yaisel Sierra struck out three during two scoreless innings. Sierra, a 25-year-old Cuban, experienced a rocky transition in 2016. Four months after signing him to a six-year, $30-million contract, the Dodgers outrighted him from the 40-man roster. Working as a reliever, Sierra posted a 4.30 earned-run average with double-A Tulsa. He looked sharp against the Rockies on Tuesday. “The sinker was explosive, late in the zone with a lot of depth,” Roberts said. “He had a punch-out with the slider. So really effective, got a couple ground balls. It was good.”

    LAD overflowing w/relief options.
Maybe it's wrong, but after watching LAD pull it together and run to the post w/o Kershaw, I'm purposely sleeping on what Blanton meant to this team.
I could see if Blanton had a successful track record in the fall ala Romo, but no.

I definitely think we could see some more time off for Adrian, but as bad as he was at hitting LHP last year, I don't see anyone rostered at this point pushing him for a platoon. SVS is the best bet for the backup job, but even on most days vs LHP I would still want Adrian in there. This is all fluid though. Adrian sucked vs LHP last season (and 2014... but not 2015?), and if he continues to suck maybe I change my tune (so I guess, in a way, I agree with you that it's a possibility). But over his career he has shown ability to hit LHP and he is still a top defensive option at 1B, so at this point I fully expect him to be our everyday 1B.

I don't know if the FO agrees with this, but my opinion on platoons is that you should only make a regular practice of platooning during the season if you are going to employ the same platoon in the playoffs. Otherwise, at what point are you creating the disparity in your team's ability to hit LHP vs RHP.

I also don't think Rube is totally off with the idea of looking for RH options to back up 1B, but you can't just plug anyone into 1B...

-Ryu had a sore abductor so he threw a bullpen instead of a live outing. Not seen as a big deal and he will throw to hitters on Saturday again.
    - Seager should play again Friday. He was hobbled after fouling a ball off of his shin above the protector.....
    - The team is giving a lot of the regulars extended time off to start the spring as it is a longer ST due to the WBC. Sounds like that will all ratchet up either over the weekend or next week.

    adrian struggled in my mind
yet when you look at his numbers only the hr/slugging seems glaring
.285/.349 is right in line with every year he's been here, as are the 90 rbi's [opportunities notwithstanding]
i agree that his range is limited, but he's never been fleet-footed over there
if svs were given the job and put up those [18/90 .285/.349/.435] numbers, people would be praising him
are we sure adrian is declining, or did he just have an off [power] year?
we talk about blanton blowing game 1 against the cubs (which he did)
but we wouldn't have even been in that game if not for adrian's 2-out, 2-rbi base hit off chapman
at 35 (come may) age is inevitably catching up with him
but first base isn't the most demanding position, which is why so many greats (bench, rose, brett) finish their careers there
and [only two years ago]... while hanley had just thrown away ck's perfecto, adrian preserved the no-no
    viva adrian :kickmexican: :wowracist:

Chase DeJong was traded to Seattle earlier
LAD still moving starting pitching and I think Seattle's 50th trade this off-season

The Mariners announced that they’ve acquired minor league right-hander Chase De Jong from the Dodgers in exchange for minor league infielder Drew Jackson and minor league right-hander Aneurys Zabala.

while we full well know its not going to be Agon of years past i still have faith in the guy
not a stat guy but have to imagine he stacks up against the best defensive first basemen we have ever had
not to mention his clutch and ultimate teammate qualities
even if he is to see another drop this year its going to take a lot to get him out of the majority of games and i'm fine w that
he became one of my all time favorite Dodgers quick just by showing up like the consummate pro that he has always been

Is it fair enough to say I'm fine with slogging around Gonzalez for another season but he doesn't have to hit cleanup if he's meh by July?
