Hard to say they threw in the towel in a season where they traded for Manny Machado and Brian Dozier. It is possible to fail without throwing in the towel.

But the payroll is rotting, starting at the very top with Kersh and Jansen.

Perhaps Kersh's celeb ping pong tourney can interest you? Featuring Matthew McConaughey?
We're all here wondering about post season chances and next year..meanwhile they're playing ping pong. Lol
It's probably for charity..hopefully, they'll donate some W's to the Dodgers while they're at it?

There's more to life than all this shit and Kersh is a good dude..... and he's pitching way better than he was earlier, too.

I think Ray describes this team's current predicament quite well.

Wait until he has a bad game or even an inning...the hatred will be like a tsunami...and we'll get suggestions to sign Strasburg, who should travel around with his own ambulance.
Talk about not reaching full potential.

I would not really compare our situation to that of the Giants really at all. A lot of (dead?)weight comes off the books over the next two seasons and there is potential for even more if Kershaw does decide to opt out.
    - If Kershaw does indeed opt out and is then retained, his tax should be lower than its $30M current mark.
    - I could see Kemp getting moved to an AL team now that he only has one year left, still had a solid season with the bat and could probably get out of about $7M of his tax hit at the least.
    - Nobody due for an arbitration raise is coming off a season where you can say they are going to get a shit ton of money(thanks to Seager missing the whole fucking year). Also, the Dodgers best players are young, cheap, controllable assets with the exceptions of Turner(well worth his contract), Jansen(now looking overpaid, but it is still early to make that call), Hill (is worth his contract if he pitches like he has been down the stretch every year) and the previously mentioned Kemp/Kershaw situations.
    - This team is still not hugging that tax figure next season and this is especially so the season after that.
    - The org is fairly top heavy now with useful MLB players on the cusp or ready to contribute with some legit everyday talent 2 years away. Guys like Toles, Verdugo and Rios should be on the roster to open next season(though one is probably starter worthy) and intriguing prospects like Smith, May and Gonsolin could be ready by mid season if not sooner. 2020 has spects like Lux and Ruiz who are star level prospects that could make impacts as well.

The Giants had nothing in their pipeline, they tried to stay competitive by throwing money at the problem, all while their young stars got expensive and regressed at the same time. That was a shitstorm that looks like will still be a problem for that franchise through next season, even with their expected run at Bryce Harper. The Dodgers are having a bad year no doubt, but they should be able to weather the storm that was a bad 2018, with solid pieces already in place for 2019 and financial room to improve their weak points in 2019. That is not to say that the Dodgers FO can sit on their hands this offseason, but the team could be back in the thick of things with a couple of well placed additions.

Why I can't see Yasmani being brought back. They're too close and as the top catcher on the market this winter, Yasmani is probably netting at least a 4yr deal that's likely in the 50-60M range if not more. And he hasn't had the big injury that's stopped him from starting 115-120 times a season since 2013, so he's seemingly in the clear there. Although, we know how unpredictable the catcher spot is from a health standpoint. Shit can turn quickly. Obviously, there can't be any real competition at catcher when you sink 50-60M into a guy. He's going to play, so those youngsters will be blocked. Don't know what that means as far as having a spot-holder for Smith/Ruiz, but I have to doubt it'll be Yasmani.

Yeah, I have a hard time seeing him come back as well. He is just way too streaky and those good streaks never seem to take place in say September or October. Wilson Ramos could be the type of guy the Dodgers look at as he is probably going to have to be on "prove it" deal after another injury filled season. The Dodgers catching depth could allow for him to get plenty of rest (I think Barnes is still hurt) and they can afford to overpay on a short term deal. Hard to see the org paying big in a trade when they have 2 catching prospects that are considered first tier position prospects and now another one deeper in the system.

We're on the same page, I was thinking Ramos as well. Shorter term, like you said..prove it deal. He mashes LHP, so I like the fit. That's probably best case scenario, though, because Philly needs catching help so bad and they're playing with all that financial flexibility this winter, that if Yasmani is snatched up by some AL club..it could be LAD VS Philly for Ramos and Philly probably wins that battle out of sheer need with nothing noteworthy coming through their system. So I'm sort of hoping Philly is the club that opens up for Yasmani, leaving Ramos to us. Like that Ramos is a Venezuelan backstop as well..can maybe mentor young VZ guys Ruiz and Cartaya somewhat while he's around.
