really stoked we have our priorities in order re-signing the best pitcher in baseball was way more important than overpaying for tanaka
and if one of those teams is struggling may be able to pry one of them away with, say, one of our 4th of's + hope the rays cartwheel, get frantic/desperate, and look to unload price
I know I sound like a broken record Don't care about the $, hate that many years. In this day and age TJ seems to only set guys back a year but every pitcher is one tweak away from being mark prior, Johan Santana or Brandon Webb.
fwiw... Tanaka's contract includes a full no-trade clause, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (on Twitter). Tanaka's contract contains an opt-out after the fourth season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). __
Tanaka's contract is the largest ever open-market deal for a right-handed free agent pitcher and trails only CC Sabathia's $161MM contract (also issued by the Yankees) for the largest free-agent contract ever signed by a pitcher. In terms of "new money," Tanaka's deal eclipses all previous pitcher contracts with the exception of Kershaw and Sabathia. While the total contract values of Justin Verlander ($180MM) and Felix Hernandez ($175MM) both exceed $155MM, each of those deals was an extension on top of two guaranteed years, meaning they contain $140MM and $135.5MM of "new money," respectively, as outlined last year by MLBTR's Tim Dierkes. Of course, the Yankees are paying more than just $155MM for Tanaka, as they will also owe a $20MM posting fee to the Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball -- Tanaka's former team in Japan. The Yankees are placing a great deal of faith in Tanaka, making a Felix-Hernandez-sized $175MM investment in order to secure his services.
have to applaud the yankees after losing cano they had to make a splash by getting ellsbury, mccann, beltran and now tanaka they're a much better team than last year
Dodgers lose out on Masahiro Tanaka to the New York Yankees By Dylan Hernandez | Los Angeles Times -- 1 hour ago The Dodgers learned Wednesday morning they wouldn’t be adding Masahiro Tanaka to their rotation. Tanaka has agreed to a seven-year, $155-million contract with the New York Yankees, according to FoxSports.com. The value of the contract is believed to be considerably more than what the Dodgers offered the Japanese right-hander. General Manager Ned Colletti wouldn’t say how much the Dodgers offered Tanaka. Colletti confirmed Dodgers officials met with Tanaka when he visited Los Angeles this month. “We went as far as we thought we could go,” Colletti said. Over the last couple of months, Dodgers officials said the team would pursue Tanaka but wouldn’t break the bank to land him. With Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu on their roster, the Dodgers already had one of the best rotations in baseball. The Yankees were far more desperate for a front-line pitcher. The Dodgers could add another starting pitcher before the start of the season, but Colletti doesn’t view it as a high priority. “I think we’re fine either way,” he said. Colletti said he has received calls from the agents of free-agent pitchers. “We’re listening,” Colletti said. Considering how much the Dodgers have talked about rebuilding their farm system, they figure to stay away from free-agent pitchers who would cost them a first-round pick to sign. That probably rules out landing the likes of Ubaldo Jimenez and Ervin Santana.
I don't know about better, they overpaid for everyone and their infield is a mess. I read somewhere this morning that's a 436M outlay.
yeah, i didn't really clarify i meant (acquiring) ellsbury/mccann/beltran/tanaka > (just) retaining cano they would have overpaid regardless (seattle did) and their infield still would have been meh
Well I guess it's just me. I don't rate Ellsbury very high also hasn't he had some health issues before? I also question whether McCann will be healthy for a whole year and Beltran has to break down at some point and we all remember how well he did in New York last time. Tanaka as we've said is unproven. That's not worth 436M to me.
no worries mon, you wanna live on an MLB bump? Let me introduce you to the new Dodgers murderers row... Now get Hanley happy in a hurry. And quit lathering over Price until he becomes available.
a lot of money to be sure but no way the nyy fans would have accepted inactivity ellsbury is an improvement over granderson imo mccann is miles better than any other catching option they had in 2013 beltran is a stud and is one of the greatest postseason performers iirc but yeah, tanaka... we'll have to wait and see
The Yankees stepped it up big time... but then they needed to We still have a hellacious lineup if we can keep them healthy
if Garza accepts a 3yr offer, sign him up. has decent stuff and i like his demeanor on the mound. anything longer than that...no sir. other than that...maybe we can look at our ownership's limit on Tanaka like this...maybe they think some of the guys on our farm are superfluous. maybe they feel they can get a deal done with Tampa and that Price @ 150M ( eventually) is better than Tanaka @ 175M (extra 20M going to Rakuten)? i mean there have been reports during the Tanaka saga that LAD has the best chance at nabbing Price because they can build the best package. i say this...anyone other than Urias can go to Tampa as far as our farm guys go. although i don't wanna see Withrow and Onelki go...because we're locking in starting pitching on longterm deals i think Lee and Stripling should be offered up before our young/power relievers. if Tampa believes they can get better than say...Ethier and cash/Seager/Lee/Stripling than at that point the Dodgers should just wait for Price to turn FA and sign stop gap guys like Garza in the meantime. Garza didn't get a QO, so there's not draft pick attached. we gotta sign somebody tho. we can't depend on Beckett and Billingsley. thing is...maybe they'll look at it like this..." is Garza good enough to pay say 14M a year for 3 years + the cost of DFA'ing Beckett? "
Ben Lindbergh @ben_lindbergh If you're wondering what Kei Igawa was up to in 2013: he had a 2.59 ERA in the same league Tanaka played in. His hair was still sumptuous. 7:50 AM - 22 Jan 2014
Damn I really wanted this guy. Greinke better not break his collar bone and Ryu better not sophomore slump. Beckett...gross...Bills not back for a while.
