As usual, every time posters start making lineups with players on them who we don't have , most recently Prince Fielder, and in the past Halladay and Lee, Peavy, Dunn, and this one or that one--that we never get (it's almost a sure thing we won't when the imaginary lienups come out...except for the Jason Schmidt and Andruw Jones signings, hardy fucking har har), Cain was just extended for 5 years.
But Hamels is still out there, so there's till someone for the "lineups of future" crowd to go at.
    Till he gets signed, anyway.

That is a beast of a contract for Cain. Don't get me wrong, I think Cain is great (a slightly better version of what Bills was supposed to be), but wow he got too much money. Way too much.

$127 million/6 years for a pitcher with a career losing record? A pitcher who couldn't beat his team's biggest rival until last season? A guy who's never sniffed the Cy Young's Top-5?

Not gonna lie, I'm happy about this deal.

He would have been a solid No. 2, but now because of this, just think how much money they'll have to pay Lincecum.

Lets face it, we all really wanted to get Cain just to stick it to the gnats. there are bigger fish to catch.

Another thing that is going to piss me off is the potential Joey Votto extension. C'mon bro it's the Reds. You're not winning shit there. But that means Phillips' time in Cincy is done. So available players we could go after that make sense would be:

    Brandon Phillips 2B
    David Wright 3B
    Mike Napoli C
    Miguel Montero C
    Cole Hamels SP
    Zach Greinke SP
    Josh Hamilton OF

Think about how much we will have to pay Kershaw? Cain now makes more than Roy Halladay per year, and for an extension twice as long as Halladay.

Oh it's going to be ridiculous. But at least it's not as bad as the Giants situation where they STILL have to resign their BEST pitcher, and also the rising salaries of Bumgartner, etc.

This amount is the salary they're willing to pay him to keep him (especially from us), not how much the guy is worth. This is how it's gotten. Amazing, isn't it? And we just read today that Kemp has probably had his career year...and he's probably still worth the 160M...
    ...and the beat goes on...

yeah i don't feel bad if we don't participate in moronic signings like this
valuable guy but no way is he worth that
if we are talking halladay, lee, sabathia type pitchers i want us to be in on that
but lets try to get value rather than lavishing massive paychecks on better than average players
those are the kind of guys that crumble under the weight of a new city and a huge payday

The bolded doesn't mean anything. Idk if he'll be worth it, but he's still top 20 pitcher in baseball.

Kemp's 8 yr 160 looks good now with Votto getting way more and Cain getting 127.

While I agree it doesn't mean everything, I'm still a guy who puts stock in wins. I believe this makes him the #4 highest paid pitcher in 2012 (tied with Roy Halladay and Justin Verlander). This is the 3rd highest contract ever for a pitcher and the highest ever for a right-handed pitcher. Not that I want to compare this to Barry Zito's contract, but it feels like that. His ERA and WHIP both ranked him #12 in 2011.

I can't help but think the Dodgers' $2 Billion buy shook things up in SF. They weren't even bidding against anyone. If you're going to throw out that kind of money at least let the player go into Free Agency and see if that really is the market. Then again, maybe they see the potential cap room available if we do become the Yankees West - and they are right to be scared of next offseason.

Say what you want. All these great players signing with their teams is discouraging and makes sucking this year even worse with nothing to look forward to.
