That's his fault? I thought we all thought that McCourt was the mastermind behind defered contracts? Think about it, why would Ned want that? It isn't his money. It's the only way to get a better player that you really can't afford. It's like leasing a car to own it. I've done it 2x and it worked fine for me. You pay for it for 8 years instead of 5. The problem arrises when you want to get another car and still haven't finished paying the other ones off. You end up selling them and having to still pay off the loan so you don't make a profit.
How does 22+ million of dead money in a single year NOT belong to the GM? His contracts. His signatures. His fingerprints are all over the paperwork. He worked out the deferment plans with these players and their agents. Let's not try to pretend he didn't. Now, I do believe Ned got totally ripped off on Manny and Andruw - which amounts to most of the $$$$ in this payroll. So, there's some sympathy for poor old Ned for you.
How handicapped was he when he signed Schmidt and Andruw Jones-I'll just use those two jerkoff signings , not even the whole ball of wax. Every one of you that defends this incompetent POS never mentions when he had as much money as any other GM in BB to spend to build a winner with, and failed like a North Korean missile test. It's always "he was handcuffed"...sure after years he was handcuffed...but what baout when even that scumbag Frank was willing to spend whatever? never a mention. Maybe if he had some skills when we needed them and didn't saddle the team with a bunch of diarrhea class players, we might have had a shot. Oh, and if he's so good, how come we go home with our tails between our legs EVERY fucking year? EVERY YEAR? And how come after he left, the Giants became the World Champions? And why'd they let him walk in the first place? I never get a response to those questions , strangely. I'm all ears.... This guy is a loser. It's in all the newspapapers. Every fucking season.
I'll agree he may have been financially handicapped to a degree but, as BZ alluded ^, it didn't stop him from making poor/ill-advised decisions and, as fools often do, he repeated the same Schmidt mistake by re-signing Garland w/o a physical -- who then never pitched for us again and a fool and his (team's sudden) money...
Here's Dilbeck's puff piece on Ned: http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodge...-long-term-20120906,0,6066227.story?track=rss
I'll admit, I was a fan of the Jones signing (as well as many others around here). I preferred Torri Hunter, but I thought Jones on a two year deal wasn't bad at all. I was shockingly wrong. Lol. I give Ned a pass for that trade, but the Schmidt one was pretty unacceptable. At first, I loved how we lured the Giants' ace away from them, but then we learn that we knew about his shoulder issues. To this day I've always believed that Ned is far more better at trading for players than signing them. He pretty much acquired Andre, Manny, and Hanley for free, would've aqcuired Sabathia and/or Lee had McCourt not be our owner, and he's also had solid pickups in Casey Blake, A-Gon, George Sherrill (until the NLCS), etc. I'm not saying Ned is great, but he's certainly not bad either. We could easily have a worse GM.
I am NOT forgiving Ned but I think contract's like Uribe's are the fault of both he and McCourt. He needed power, saw orange, and knew he was cheaper than others. He should have gotten Willingham. Moron.
