yeah it isn't the minimum... I read somewhere that all teams had to spend at least $81M in total payroll or the portion they did not spend also got thrown into the 'share' pool and was divied up. To prevent cheap skate owners from running a $50m roster and pocketing the rest of the proceeds... like San Diego or numerous others

Zack Greinke is a huge basketball fan. Magic Johnson is one of the Dodgers' owners. So did Johnson deliver a personal recruiting pitch for the Dodgers?
As it turns out, no. Johnson expects to meet Greinke for the first time Tuesday, when the Dodgers hold an introductory news conference for the $147-million pitcher who did his own free-agent research.
Johnson was not in town when Greinke, trying to decide with which team to sign, visited Dodger Stadium for a three-hour meeting with Dodgers President Stan Kasten and General Manager Ned Colletti. Manager Don Mattingly also met with Greinke.
"What happened was really interesting," Johnson said Monday. "He came in by himself. No agent, nobody.
"He just came in to talk to Stan and to Ned to find out the direction, find out about the organization, find out about us. So, when Ned called me, I said, 'Do I need to call him or not?' And Ned said, 'No, let him go ahead. I think we laid it out to him.' I am always willing to make the call.
"I think, because he played with the Angels, he knew L.A. He got a sense of it already. I think a lot of questions were answered in terms of L.A. I think Stan and Ned just had to talk to him about the Dodgers."
Johnson said he is looking forward to meeting Greinke.
"We’re going to have a lot of time to talk," Johnson said. "I heard he is a big basketball fan, so we’ll be able to talk not only Dodger baseball, but also we’ll be able to talk about basketball. Whatever direction he wants to go."

Not that I know of. They cut off the upper half of the league from revenue sharing so only the bottom feeders get it but short of a half mill each there is no minimum.

Here is something I did not know about:

"It was in Kansas City where Greinke won the 2009 American League Cy Young Award, playing for manager Trey Hillman, who is now the bench coach of the Dodgers. Hillman provided management with insight into Greinke's talents on the mound and idiosyncrasies off it."

A native Floridian.... and Captain Weirdo? We are doomed. But hey, there's always the fourth WC. Do they have that yet?
Even if he does overcome the Caucasian pressure, there is always the other ones which could spell doom; hetero pressure...straights will expect him to win..."quiet guy" pressure; introverts will expect it, too....and worst of all, cheerleader pressure. They will all expect him to win for his 147M.
Poor guy has a daunting task ahead.
I don't envy him.

Here is snippets of a funny interview with Greinke from 2011, to show you the type of guy he is (I think it's funny and honest, but I'm willing to bet some reporters and fans are gonna take it as him being a jerk/non-leader):

I could see it only occasionally in Greinke, because he rarely made eye contact with five invited interviewers during a 36-minute session inside the Brewers' cramped public relations office.
It was the first time Greinke had agreed to be interviewed this spring, because until Tuesday he had declined impromptu requests at his locker. Fiddling with a water-bottle cap and shifting his lanky body into a variety of positions in an office chair, he seemed to be as relaxed as he is capable of being in such circumstances, apparently because he felt he had more control.
"Ninety-nine percent of the reason I do it like this is I come to the park and want to get focused on my next start," he said. "If I didn't do it this way, some random guy I've never met would come and talk to me.
"Some lady came up to me yesterday and just started talking nonsense. It takes eight minutes to get a real question out because it's buttering me up. Then they get to the question and it's a stupid question. So I've wasted 10 minutes and in that 10-minute time I didn't get to do what I needed to do. And even if it is a good question, I spend 10 minutes and they take the one quote that didn't mean anything."
But here's the duality of the Brewers' new ace:
About 20 minutes into the session, the Brewers' PR guy said there was time for only one more question.
Greinke told him, "I could stay longer. If there's (more) questions, that's fine."
The guy is compelling, smart, polite and over-the-top honest to the point that he admitted that he didn't even like to pitch when he was in high school.

"Yeah, it does, but it's still tough," Greinke said. "It's not like I like a lot of stuff. I don't like talking bad about fans, but they annoy me a lot of times, like the autograph guys out here. The ones who annoy me the most is when we get to the hotels. Sometimes I feel like I can't go outside because there are fans downstairs."

Greinke is also an off-the-charts athlete. He said he'd rather turn a double play than pitch because he rarely breaks a sweat in nine innings of throwing a baseball. He came to the National League because he can hit. He fields his position better than anyone in the game.

"It wears me out to do stuff like our meetings every day," he said. "If I actually listened to them, it would wear me out. So I go into a little daze.
"It's always been that way with me. Say teachers are talking to me in math class and they're going over these things. Really, you only need 10 seconds for the answer and they give you five minutes. You spend all this time focusing and most of it is nonsense."
Or conversation.
"To talk to people, I have to spend energy," he said. "If I spend my energy focused on talking to people to make friends, that takes away from the energy I could be focused on getting ready to pitch. So I just try to avoid nonsense talk."

small market teams will always have an uphill battle... that's never going to change... and you're absolutley right that some clubs, the Cardinals being one, have done a great job of rewarding a loyal fan base with great farm systems and well run but modest spending programs... the new agreement requires all owners to spend a high enough minimum that they have a chance to be competitive... maybe...

Most small market teams fail miserably or get lucky once or twice but to build a year over year solid program takes work.
