It's easy to like Barnes, that's for sure...and his minor league numbers are certainly impressive. But when he comes up to the Show, he does very little with the bat. If he could even maintain about a .250 BA, with a decent OBP, he could probably be the starting catcher, considering the alternatives.

Segedin needs a shot in the show somewhere
Raw power flashing all year, can run too
Not to the point of stealing bases, but he can go 1B to 3B or 1B to home, good athlete

59 PA over two seasons isn't much to go on.

Dodgers find no takers for former Cuban star signed to $30MM deal
by Arthur Weinstein | Sporting News — 93 minutes ago
    [IMG]
Baseball insiders were buzzing about Cuban pitcher Yaisel Sierra during the offseason.

The right-hander with the 96 mph fastball defected from Cuba last year, and MLB declared Sierra a free agent in December. During the offseason, Sierra reportedly wowed scouts when he pitched at an exhibition event in front of some 350 scouts and other baseball executives.

So when the Dodgers signed Sierra to a six-year, $30 million deal in February, it seemed like a shrewd move to many, certainly to executives in the Dodgers organization.

But after the 25-year-old pitcher stumbled to a terrible start (a 7.14 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 49 innings) with the Dodgers Single-A affiliate in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., the Dodgers on Sunday outrighted him off the club's 40-man roster to the minor leagues.

But to do that, the Dodgers had to take a gamble that no other club would claim him off waivers.

No other team did, given Sierra's horrific start — not to mention the fact he is still owed $23.5 million from that still-fresh contract.

So Sierra will remain with the Dodgers organization, although some fans have already given up on him.

I'm tired of all these overpriced failed Cubans. One after the other. It's a joke. They all suck and get get 30+ million before doing anything in the US.

I'm not up to speed on this guy but he's still only 25, there's time to turn it around.

    Ask Bud Norris...

I know nobody wants to hear about adjusting to being in a new country and being suddenly rich but here's another failed (so far) Cuban. Then to be sent to Cucamonga lol! The fact that there are no takers is due to his contract but it could also be the timing of the new International signing period but who knows he just off the 40 man and it could be a break nobody claimed him. Maybe a conversion to reliever?

Yadier Alvarez continued his early success at AZL last night: 5IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB and 6Ks. 16Ks and 5BB over 13 1/3 innings thus far.

Chase DeJong another strong outing for Tulsa. 6IP, 1ER, 1 walk and 6 strikes. Now 9 - 4 with a 2.39 ERA Andrew Toles the Rays reject, 3 - 4, a HR, double and 3 RBI.

Reports are very high on him. Someone watched him the other day and said he has potential to be a legit 2(One of those scouts that refuses to call someone a potential Ace). Still has some refinement, but felt he has taken a very good first step and throws an easy 100 MPH. Could be a big second wave coming in a season or two with Alvarez and Holmes.

Two more guys who are starting to get more and more glowing reviews. De Jong has added a cutter the past couple of weeks that seems to be giving guys fits.

Sounds like Toles is really starting to put it together. He has always had the talent, it was just whether he could hold it together. Seems like he has gotten the help he needs and it is paying off in a big way on the field.

Nice write up on Verdugo who continues to look like another potential stud for the top of the line up. Would be great to have a doubles machine, table setter up in front of Seager. If Puig truly has turned the corner, then Verdugo will add another element of great D in LF with his plus plus arm. With the plethora of good pitching prospects, having your top 4 OF's out there all with strong arms would necessitate for a lot of station to station situations. The OKC OF may be looking for another OF'er as Veneble is probably going to be DFA'd Thursday and Tulsa is getting really crowded. Could be interesting to see if they move Alex up and see what he can do the second half of the season.
