Yes and we know as Dodger fans about it. I just don't know why it seems like somebody will bring it up and be shocked.

    look at this...
    • Scherzer will receive $210MM for seven years of work, but the contract has an unusual structure, with Scherzer receiving $15MM per season for the next 14 years, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. That means the Nationals will be paying Scherzer through 2028. Also, Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan tweets that the deal includes a $50MM signing bonus that will be paid out “over a portion of time” for tax reasons. That bonus would, presumably, be included in the $210MM total. As Passan notes, the deferral makes the contract worth about $185MM in present-day dollars. (And MLB will calculate the value of the contract in present-day dollars for luxury-tax purposes, Rosenthal tweets.) The structure of the contract and Washington DC tax laws could ultimately save Scherzer over $20MM, however, Passan reports. Scherzer’s deferral is, obviously, the largest one in MLB contract history, leaving Bobby Bonilla and the Mets’ lengthy $29.8MM deferral in the dust.
that'll make him even harder to trade in a couple years

Is this contract even legal under the baseball CBA. I recall the NHL had a loophole in their CBA where teams could structure 100-year contracts and spread out the total value of the contract over those many years. Although total value of the contract would be large, the year-to-year hit would be low. The NHL closed that loophole.

I'd be shocked if the baseball CBA allows for this, and if it does, that's a bunch horse-pucky.

It also makes Scherzer virtually untradeable without the Nats paying a large portion of the remaining contract even if Scherzer is traded. This could potentially ruin the Nats in 3-4 years if they don't win it this or next year.......there are some coming FA on that team that they can't give money too because of the headache coming down the road, and they may need to trade their minor league talent to stay relevant.

As you say, NHL teams did that to lower the cap hit, Rosenthal said the luxury tax hit will still be $26 or $28M (it was on hot stove, would quote tweet if i could).

But amusingly enough, Bonilla will still be getting paid 7 years after Max gets his last check.

Washington would more than likely have to eat all of that money post the 7 year contract. But he is damn near impossible to trade.

Look, I don't even care if the Nats win one world series out of this disasterous contract. The fact is the current Nats mangement have mortgaged their future for this 2 year shot at winning....which is no guarantee.

This is an albatross of a contract, and a pretty cynical one. Essentially, current management will not have to worry about the long term consequences. Win one and then retire. Never win one and the retire. What do they care? They will just argue that they tried, take their millions, and ride off into the sunset for another group to work out the mess.

^... but... you know... if WE had signed Scherzer then WHATEVER the amount, so long as it was LESS than Kershaw's deal, then no one at DSP would give a damn how the deal was structured. Just sayin'...

    TRUTH.

agreed. we just don't need the Dodgers being one of those teams getting locked into shitty deals. the Greinke contract is the blueprint for us.

it's true for some. others are more reasonable.

    I haven't missed a gam in a long time. Granted it cost 125 bucks a year, but I still haven't. :)

    The thing with deferred payments
yah youre paying it for a longer time
but there isnt some interest theyre paying after year 7
its like 0% APR the type of shit you see in commercials
its a flat rate of 15M for 14 years
but what is 15M going to be worth 8 years from now?
    and in 14 years?
With expanding markets and inflation that 15M down the line wont be shit
Thats why when you win the lottery you cash out immediately
250M now is worth more than 250M in 10 years
The only thing is they will be paying him for 7 years after his contract
but whats it matter if youre gonna spend 210M regardless?
    I rather defer that money.
Put me in charge ill be deferring all kinds of money
And probably getting fired real quick

Why do you call it a two year shot at winning?
