I'm sure a lot of us were concerned last year too, losing Blanton, then Morrow happened. Honestly, I probably feel better now than I did this time last year with Cingrani and Alexander.

Probably ESPN's typical sky is falling news reporting, but they are speculating that if Kershaw opts out (which is likely), he's gonna approach it like Greinke and that Texas would be the likely destination since its close to home.

Of course, if the Dodgers win it all this year, all that might change.

But it's probably click bait for now.

    espn trolling as usual
way to go out on a limb and say he might want to play close to home
and lol at the greinke comparison -- no one approaches anything like greinke

Truly, the only bad news I've read about this so far is that Mark Walter publicly said he wants to see Kershaw be a Dodger for life and every time he does that they never sign the guy.

Honestly, I'm not too worried about Kershaw. All jokes aside, he's not going to find a place where he has a better chance to win the WS, and we aren't committed to going under the cap this year just to sit on our hands next offseason. If he's still 80% of the pitcher he's been, he will be our #1 priority, and we will be in a position to outbid anyone... although there's a good chance we won't have to go to that extreme. He's from Dallas, and the Rangers aren't exactly a dream destination for a pitcher. My prediction is he goes the Kenley Jansen route over the Zack Greinke route - basically tells his agent to get a fair deal from the Dodgers and close the deal. I'm not saying we will sign him cheap, but I don't think we will have to be the highest bidder as long as we make a strong offer... which we will.

So ultimately, you see him opting out and playing nice..and that maybe LAD won't be the highest bidder, but he'll take less in that scenario and stay. Seems about right.

And if he doesn't play nice, or he wants to break the bank and go extra-wild with this contract, they really should let him go to whomever's trying to load up an aging Kershaw with an amount that makes little sense.

And they'll eventually move Maeda back into the pen if they must. They agreed to give him the best chance to hit his bonuses, but ultimately, he'll do what's best for the team. Or somebody like Wilmer Font will step up. Either way, worrying about the bullpen in the regular season is a waste of time with AF in control..unless Jansen gets hurt, of course. Short of that, they'll figure it out. Have proven that much.

Now, what happens in the post-season is a different matter. All bets are off when AF puts together a group that goes on an all-time run, carving through the NL side, only for top gun Jansen to shit the bed in the WS. But for now it's simply " next man up ". Somebody's been granted an early opportunity to perform for the WS favorites. We'll see who answers the call.

    agree with both posts
i think kersh will ultimately re-sign an extension
don't think he's overly concerned with the annual amount, more the (additional) years
but if he were to get too greedy and/or someone offered (say) $40MM/year for 5-7 years...
then you have to let him walk

imo maeda excelled as a bullpen arm
    seemed to relish it too
    i like font (no homo)
haven't watched him at all this spring, but rumors were he was hitting his spots (for the most part) and the velo was solid
and you're right about friedman... every year he's managed to fill whatever void there's been in the pen

This Tony Gonsolin cat is an interesting one to watch as well. Although, maybe he won't be ready for the call this season. But as CKWG noted the other day, he started last year working mainly 89-91 MPH, moved up to 94-96 by mid-season and was touching 100MPH by season's end. They want him to be a multi-inning reliever

    wow
    missed that
velo jumps like that are (obviously) rare
would have to think it was a mechanical change
    but damn, that's encouraging!

This off-season provided some hope as far as teams showing fiscal restraint or responsibility, so hopefully that carries over into next off-season. Harper and Machado, the young guns, are going to kill it and rightfully so. But aging Kershaw..aging Josh Donaldson..a Charlie Blackmon turning 32 as a CF..teams need to once again show some restraint and keep the market from being silly. It only takes one team to stray, though, as we saw this off-season with that dumbass 140M+ deal going to Hosmer

Pretty much. And at the end of the day I see him playing nice. He will still be the highest paid pitcher in baseball as he should be, and he will still be in Blue.
