    mlb trade rumors...
    • 1:26pm: All of the teams still engaged with Harper’s camp — including, presumably, the Dodgers and Phillies — are discussing contracts of at least one decade in length, per Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter).

LOL, I like the line "at least one decade in length". It leaves open the possibility of a 2 or 3 decade deal.

Also wouldn't surprise me if Arenado saw the hassle that Machado and Harper are going through in getting their $$$ and figured he could avoid all that uncertainty.

Machado found out what was behind door #3..the pAAAdres.

Funny thing is Harper would still be 2 years younger at the end of a 14-year deal than Pujols will be at the end of his deal.

You know Friedman would do like 14/350-375 just to lower the AAV.

If there are player options after year 4, 8 and 10 I don't see what the harm is for the player. Union and agent might not like it but who cares

Was just thinking the same. Because I remember the report of Boras wanting $36-38M AAV/10yrs for Harp

Perhaps fighting over the middle ground now since they're talking at least 10yr pacts

He definitely should have a higher AAV than Kersh
I still remember the report that Harp is impressed by Houston..if they're a mystery team in this..

Steve Phillips at Phillies camp this morning said that the club feels their chances of landing Bryce are now remote. If rumors are true that the Dodgers have offered 10+ years, then he is going to be a Dodger UNLESS the Giants do something incredibly stupid and offer like $400M. I still hesitate to believe that we have offered 10+ years, but if the club does go to that number, I wonder if they would go longer if AAV is not major factor compared to general size. Phillips is now saying that the Phillies are balking at an opt out after 3 years, which Boras is insisting on.

Well, you know where they don't mind opt outs..

God that would fucking suck and I could totally see them being a reasonable option too. He would not get crushed on his taxes either like he would in Cali. Only thing is, Houston is a SHITTY place to live.

Thing with HOU, big Latino population..and Harper is from Vegas, loves LA, so I would assume that HOU wouldn't be that uncomfortable for him in terms of the culture

Yeah. I have my eye on HOU as a potential mystery team here. Don't like it either

I would not be shocked if the Dodgers were offering him opt outs every year after the 3rd season.

I get the sense that most guys with these big contracts aren't too worried about the tax hits. Maybe because their agents aren't facing the same tax situation, so the agent doesn't care. But also, I think it's less about the actual money and more about what the money means.

You are probably right on that. It is something that a lot of writers bring up, but the only time I feel like it ever comes out is tweener guys. I can't remember who it was, but there was a bigger contract guy a couple years ago that said the taxes mattered in his decision. That was the only time I remember someone openly admitting to that.

The Cubs announced that their new TV deal will generate an extra $40-$50M a year in cash flow. This is something to keep an eye on as Harper's top 3 choices were Yankees, Cubs and Dodgers. This could bring another player into the game.
