The California Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have already tucked their tail between their legs and run away. Also, if I were a fearless forecaster of the coming season, I would predict that the Yank-me's miss the play offs.
The rest of the article talks about him playing for a team that is in or near a large Japanese population. Chicago has 12 percent the Japanese population of LA. everything says LA if we really want him and come close to the top salary offer.
The Dodger contract gas us giving 2.1 billion back to MLB for revenue sharing that along with us being such a big road draw minimizes how upset other owners are by our wealth. Their fans may not like it but it is money that is easier for them to pocket. Just like Miami now with Puig and the jump in attendance when we show up. It is the AL teams that won't benefit as much.
Nikkan: Clubs Submit Formal Tanaka Offers Clubs angling to sign Masahiro Tanaka made formal offers by Jan. 16, Nikkan Sportsreports (Japanese link). The list of teams includes the Yankees, Dodgers, Diamondbacks,White Sox and Cubs, with nearly all clubs putting together offers worth more than $100MM over six years. The Diamondbacks have made no secret of their pursuit of Tanaka this winter, and according to Nikkan, they've offered him a deal for six years and $120MM. Such a contract would be the largest in Diamondbacks history by a wide margin. "Like other teams, we're very interested," CEO Derrick Hall was quoted as saying at a recent meeting of MLB owners. "We want to win this competition." Owner Ken Kendrick also reportedly met with Tanaka directly during his recent tour of clubs in the U.S. The Dodgers and Yankees are believed to have made equivalent offers, according to Nikkan, while comments by Angels owner Arte Moreno suggest that the team would have trouble fitting Tanaka into its budget. Overall, we appear to be nearing the stage in negotiations where the only step remaining is Tanaka's actual decision.
Okay dick measuring time. If all bids are around the same amount, he is ours. The ONLY way he goes to Chicago is if they WAY overbid. We are talking 7/165. While he could be THAT fa that Theo and company are banking on, that is a lot of eggs in one basket. New York, IMO, is the wildcard. Are they willing to match and beat any offer? If so, it comes down to location. I think we have a number and will play the game until that number is surpassed. The only way that I go all out is if it is AZ that appears to be the front runner.
I wonder if anyone has a stat on the success vs. failure of Asian import pitchers into the game? It sure seems like its tilted toward the failure side but i could be wrong. You throw a bad contract that size on AZ and it is going to hurt them bad for years. Sort of thinking we got lucky with Ryu and it can't be that easy to acquire guys that put it together like Darvish and Nomo. Idk I know its not my money but from a gambling/odds perspective...
This update suggests they upped the years and money. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-b...de-formal-offers-masahiro-023708570--mlb.html
Conflicting reports out of Chicago, Tom Loxas, a Chicago Sports Insider says the Cubs have offered Tanaka in the neighborhood of 160. TomLoxas @TomLoxas 3h Heard #Cubs offer for Tanaka in 160 mil neighborhood plus posting fee. Whereas, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun says the Cubs remain a long shot. https://twitter.com/GDubCub/status/424744849888141312
^saw that too d99... Gordon Wittenmyer @GDubCub Beware reports suggesting Cubs have high offer on table for Tanaka or that he's favoring Cubs. Multiple sources say Cubs remain long shots.7:27 PM - 18 Jan 2014 __
I agree. If AZ outbids us, I say let them have him. Tying up $20 million/year on an unproven MLB pitcher doesn't sound like a game they should be in on. Even if he pans out, I'd think the contract could be a burden on them.
I agree. Whereas CK was managed with kid's gloves early in his career, Tanaka racked up the big innings early. Some people criticize the new Kershaw contract because he's always one pitch away from serious arm trouble. Well every pitcher is, and my gut tells me the probability of that happening is higher with Tanaka. Not saying I'm against signing him, but if there's an all-out bidding war, let another team take that risk.
Japan time is 17 hours ahead, the deadline is 2:00 pacific. Right now it's 4:30am January 20th in Japan. Will he be coming here to announce or will we be sleeping when he does make a decision? I personally am impatient and would like this done already!!!
Masahiro Tanaka Rumors: Sunday By Edward Creech [January 19 at 2:15pm CST] Masahiro Tanaka will reportedly command a contract in the neighborhood of $120MM over six years (plus the expected $20MM posting fee) and is said to have received such an offer from the Diamondbacks. Here's the latest with five days remaining before Tanaka's posting period expires Friday at 4pm CT: Tanaka's decision should come Tuesday or Wednesday to allow time for further medical exams to take place prior to the Friday deadline, an AL scout tells David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com (via Twitter). Kaplan tweets the same scout tells him the Cubs' current state is the biggest drawback in their landing Tanaka. Yesterday, we learned the Cubs made a formal offer to Tanaka, but are considered a long shot to win the bidding. The White Sox, who also have reportedly have made a formal offer to Tanaka, are in the same boat as the Cubs, tweets Kaplan. The Mariners may have been priced out of contention for Tanaka or the 25-year-old's interest in Seattle wasn’t as high as some thought, reports the Seattle Times' Geoff Baker.
good. kick those bummy Chicago clubs to the side...Tanaka might be a winner after all. his best leverage is gonna be keeping the Diamondbacks involved.
If he wants money and to win now he will come here. If he just wants money he will go elsewhere. It's that simple.
