I don't care about this guy...he does do innings though. And he is a better option than Crap....and to a large degree what Lilly gave us. But if the DBacks get him, and we obviously wanted him, WTF does this all say about Ned's as a GM? This Off season anyway? The prize of the universe is in NY, and maybe Arroyo on a direct NLW competitor? Haren was hardly even out there at all, he was signed Bang. And really who knows where this guy is physically? We are not that set, we had holes ....and still do. If your not going to go after the best available at those positions, then we still have the same approach signing Justin Turner -like players; and IMO, it's been a loser formula for as long as Ned has been around. That's a fact. What's the excuse this time? Can't be Frank's lack of money, can it? How many posts were there with lineups with Cano and Headly and staffs with Tanaka-san. Well we are sans Tanaka instead and got Juan back and a guy at 2B who they "don't know if he can play that position"...2B? Isn't that pretty important?
fyi... Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 4m Arroyo's deal with Arizona: 9.5m in 2014, 9.5m 2015, 4.5m buyout on an $11m option on 20162:07 PM - 7 Feb 2014 · Details
It probably won't bite them, but he isn't going to make them any better. You know what you're going to get with Arroyo, 12-12 season with a 3.80 ERA and 208 innings. I predict the DBacks will be average at best this season.
Arroyo had been linked to both the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks, but Bill Shakin of the LA Times reports that the Dodgers’ interest in the right-hander was not as strong as reported. http://fansided.com/2014/02/07/bronson-arroyo-signs-2-year-deal-diamondbacks/#!uIbiY __
Wonder if the Dodgers have seen something with Beckett that makes them comfortable, or potentially are ok with the idea of Lee and Stripling vying for the final spot in the rotation.
Translation: Arroyo's agent asked if the Dodgers would pretend to have interest in order to drive up the price on the DBacks. The Dodgers said "sure".
Just saw that his decision came down to Orioles and Dbacks. You know he wanted us. I think Ned may have been playing up our want to get Towers to jump a bit higher. That is pretty fun.
I was looking at his ERA by stadium last night and he actually has a lower one in Arizona than in LA. Go figure.
It is pretty fun? is that what you believe? Not me....I think Ned wanted him big time, just as he wanted Tanaka, and he lost out on both of them. How much could Ned's "posturing" drive up the price anyway? And even if it did, is 5 or 6 million more (no where near that amount really) going to hurt the DBacks? C'mon.. Not long ago, from every source possible, including here, the belief was "the LAD will get anyone they want. They are the fat cats now"...or similar. I guess not. Or the coveted players available, like Tanaka and Arroyo, could give a shit about being on LA. Anyway, I hope Arroyo tanks, big time.
It was hyperbole. If we wanted Arroyo, we probably wanted him for a year. He wanted two, and other teams were willing to give him two. Just because the team has the money, doesn't mean they should spend it everywhere.
keith law on arroyo... :woot: The Diamondbacks' signing of Bronson Arroyo was a mistake, ESPN's Keith Law writes (Insider-only). Law argues that Arroyo's declining velocity, tendency to give up homers, and struggles with lefties all make him a bad bet for two years and $23.5MM. Arroyo allowed 32 homers last season (although 19 of them were in the Reds' homer-friendly ballpark), and lefties hit .295/.327/.529 against him. He's also had an average fastball velocity of about 87 MPH the past several seasons, which Law suggests has been one cause of his home-run problems. __
Has a team ever said, "Oh no we're facing Arroyo tonight!" And I agree about the salary, he's now the highest paid player on the team for the next 2 years. He's nothing if not consistent, so he will be serviceable - but when the highest paid player on your team is the definition of "average", that's not a good sign.
