Dodgers acquire Michael Young from Phillies
by Mark Townsend | 4 hours ago

Hold on just a second, the Los Angeles Dodgers managed to squeeze one in final deal before the August trade deadline passed on Saturday night. According to Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal, 36-year-old infielder Michael Young will be making his way to the west coast after being acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for pitching prospect Rob Rob Rasmussen.

Rosenthal adds that Young waived his full no-trade clause so the deal could through, citing that Young grew up a Dodgers fan as as a possible factor in his decision.

Well that's all nice to hear, but how exactly does Young fit with Los Angeles? Especially with another third baseman on the roster in Juan Uribe who's putting up eerily similar numbers this season offensively.

Michael Young in 2013: .272/.333/.389. Juan Uribe in 2013: .268/.326/.395. Young OPS: .722. Uribe OPS: .722.

For manager Don Mattingly, it's a simple solution.

Mattingly: Uribe remains the Dodger 3B. Young can play 1B, 3B.

Honestly, that's the only decision that makes sense for Los Angeles. Though it's a wash offensively, defensively Young would represent a pretty significant downgrade over Uribe, and there's no sense accepting that downgrade at this point in the season. As an added piece that can provide bench depth and insurance in case of injury, the Dodgers certainly could have done worse.

Young brings experience, which is probably overstated but is certainly valued by teams heading to the postseason. And despite his struggles, he brings a degree of versatility defensively, having played all four infield positions throughout his career. Limiting him to the corners at this stage in his career would be their best bet, though.

Also, when it comes down to it, the $950K million Young is owed for the rest of the season is a drop in the bucket for the Dodgers. He's a free agent this winter, so they're not locked into a long term commitment. All they're probably hoping for here is a handful of professional at-bats and one or two big hits in October that turn a game around and bring them closer to their ultimate goal.

If he provides that, this last second trade will look darn good two months from now. If he produces beyond that, it will look like a great trade. If the Dodgers fall short and Young struggles, people will make the same old Michael Young jokes on social media while the Dodgers reload heading into 2014.

Great move and an improvement on Hairston. An important piece for a post season run IMO.

    Right.
We will pay dearly, and soon, when what should have been routine third out of an inning goes sailing over Gonzo's head or bounces eight feet in front of him thrown by Young, extends an inning and we get in a deep hole in a playoff game we should have won.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Juan's glove has been easily as good as anyone's on the team.
Totally a PH, IMO. I can see that, but only on this basis.

    :D

This move took me completely by surprise but it's a great depth move.

You have to believe we will carry 11 pitchers and 14 position players for our run (if we get there). The quandary will be going beyond the 4 starters (with a 5th as long relief) and then figuring out the bench. Below is what I think we walk into the postseason with. Pretty damn good. We have decent backups and PH from both sides of plate. With the addition of Kemp and Young, we have two more righties. We have depth. The final pitching spot will be interesting. League has done his best to make a mockery of his contract, Marmol has looked decent lately but is he trusted given his track record, and Volquez is Marmol 2.0 in starter form. I have to think that we go with 11 in order to carry 14 because there is no way that DBB walks into the playoffs without Hairston. He still believes in him and he can play multiple positions.

I like the idea of a young/uribe platoon over anything else that could be thrown out there. Two older vets with similar stats. Sure young isn't as good defensively but he has been tearing the cover off the ball lately. This team has shown it will sacrifice defense for offense.

Ok why Young? AGon needs rest. he had two days off and guess what hit to home runs. This gives a quality bat to rest him and Hairston is worn down. Probably the most important reason is we now have a quality right handed bat to DH against a lefty starter in the WS. Kemp, Puig and Dre or CC in the field and Young as the DH. Also if AGon or Uribe get hurt in the final month it gives insurance. Guys we have owners with deep pockets who got rich selling insurance/investments so they appreciate risk management. Also if Hanley went down we could slide Uribe to short and Young to third. When you spend over 2 billion for a team and 220 million for your first year payroll and are on the verge of mission accomplished why wouldn't you spend a tad more for insurance.

It also has a signature on it and it expires after this season.

As long as he's a pure bench bat I'm cool with it, although against lefty relievers I might still prefer SVS

Some of that will depend on the situation, we know how Donny likes to double switch.

On second thought , he is now my second favorite LAD, behind, of course, Wilson. The idea that he is clean shaven I find abhorrent though, and hope that he quickly adds some kind of hirsute facial adornment.
Of unusual type and color, preferrably.
    Young rocks.
I've read however, that youth is wasted on the Young.
Is that why you chose him, then Ned ?
    Is Otis Nixon still available?

Hairston won't make the playoff squad and Young will. Isn't Hairstons avg down to 230. If we win it all he will get his ring. Fill in the blank for. That vacancy with Gordon or another relief pitcher and perhaps not campy. Why Dee? To pinch run.

Great trade. Little moves like this can make a big difference in October...and it's a small price to pay to bring a player who commands league-wide respect into your clubhouse. It's obviously bad to overrate the intangible shit, but it's definitely a factor. This move has no downside.

DBB in the minds of many not all has done a master full job of working the roster. Since Ned and Stan have confidence in him they are willing to give hima potentially valuable new piece.
