Anybody got any opinions on Barnes? Guy does not hit at all, and have two catchers already... The "small sample size" thing about him not hitting right now is useless.
I think he's the real back up catcher and they can now use Ruiz as a pinch hitting option against lefties... He probably doesn't get any at bats. Can't risk using your backup catcher as a pinch hitter and losing them cause you don't want any scenario without a backup catcher since if for any reason you need your backup catcher and don't have one readily available, you're royally fucked.
I think they've done it most years and it's typically what teams do. You have a shorter rotation, you get more days off, and will rely more on your main relievers, so you don't need great length in the bullpen. Maybe next round they go with 12 man rotation... I thought they'd do that this round and include Wood but, I guess not. They've typically gone with this breakdown though
really surprised about wood not on the squad i like kike, and he's been through a lot this year emotionally, but its a good call keeping him off the roster
Nope, but I think (and I'm making big assumptions) that the thinking goes that Ruiz is one of the better options we currently have against left handed pitching... In the normal scenario where he's the only back up catcher, you can't use him. So now, you can use him. In a sense the thinking might have been that Ruiz is a better pinch hitter option versus lefties (or righties) compared to Segedin or Enrique, and I'd tend to agree with that.
My guess, Barnes is just there for emergency purposes. We don't have a lot of RH hitting depth, and I think this means they want to use Ruiz as a PH. Edit: didn't see doyerfans posts
Wow...Russell Martin has a really impressive record of appearing in the post season, going way back to when with us. I think he might have missed only one time, in 2010. Clever and lucky little hoser, eh?
I don't recall us doing this before, but I'm sure teams with good hitting backup catchers have done this before. Our FO also looooves to exploit DL rules, and in the case of an emergency they can replace a player on the postseason roster if they place the injured player on the DL. But the replaced player becomes ineligible for the rest of that series and the next series. Because Grandal is so important, they'd rather use that rule for a pitcher than Grandal. The more I think about it, the more I like this move. It doesn't hurt that Barnes can play 2B and 3B, but he's basically the last guy on the bench, he's not playing.
Good thinking...so basically, he's a wasted spot unless a disaster occurs. Wow..talk about a double edged sword...
Every team has an emergency backup catcher who doesn't play, so Barnes isn't a wasted spot since he allows us to use Ruiz. Also if Yaz has an injury, there's less pressure to put him on the DL.
