So tell Mark Walter to buy the moon so he can trade it to them. Problem solved! Surely guggenheim has enough $$ to buy the moon, right?

The rumor was that the Mets would have just given him to whoever made the claim. Owed $11 mil next year and a lot of teams don't want to take a chance on a guy who is having a down year at age 41.

wow, really? Dodgers would be foolish to not jump on a straight salary dump for Colon, I don't think that is true, it can't be.

In a possibly related story, from the astronauts who have actually been there, have disclosed that "the moon smells"; has an odor to it.
    Square business.
Maybe this is where the green cheese thing started? But how did they know way back then?
    Hmmmm.
    Omen?

a down year for Colon? well, we know that rumor is shit. Lol the 41yr old is havin a really solid season and under contract for another year..OK, i mean what do we have comin up next year? we're losing Beckett to free agency and Urias could probably use another year of farm ball. it's possible that Haren will be back of course, but why not put him in the Maholm role next year? they could still go out and look to add a James Shields to the rotation at worst because they did make a play for Tanaka last winter. i mean next year, we could have Kershaw-Greinke-Ryu-Shields-Colon with Haren as the 6th man/swing guy. that looks damn good and money's not an issue, right?

but that's just going forward because i don't believe 11M should hinder our ownership from grabbing Colon and we don't have any arms that just have to make the jump next year, so personnel shouldn't be an issue either. more importantly, we could definitely use Colon as a 4th starter right now and pushing Haren to BP work in the post season sounds ideal. reports say it doesn't look like the Halos are gonna go for Colon, so how high can the Mets really push their asking price for Colon if nobody claimed him and the market is scarce. maybe the NYM just want Colon as a part of the rotation next year?

Hard to know what's what on this, but there it is.
One of the reasons I think we have to get there this year so much, is I don't like the looks of next year at all. Pitching wise, and the Hanley thing coming up, and aging corner IF players, etc.
If there is no guts, there is no glory.
A whole lotta money was spent, we all know, but if this one is like the last 25, then what are we looking at? Can Joc pitch?
If Colon can make a difference, buy him a salami factory if he wants it...he'd be glad to go to a contender, too. May be inspired; jazzed up.
How we got to where we are with the rotation is mind boggling...but let's not just sit there and watch our own Waterloo.

well, we are talkin about pitching in today's game here, so it is what it is as far as our current standing..you just can't have enough of it. guys need rests and arms are delicate. if anything, protect the Greinke investment..grab Colon, sit Greinke down on the 15 day DL, give him a rest and then bring him back re-charged and ready to go for mid-late September. Kershaw's had his rest, Ryu's gotten his rest..why treat Greinke any different? give the man a couple weeks to clear his head. at the very least, they could do that with a solid addition like Colon.

i think we'll be fine next year and going forward. Guerrero will be up with the big club and we'll probably see a lot more of Arruba on the left side of the infield. if they need something going forward, they'll buy it..so long as it doesn't cost draft picks. all i worry about when it comes to the future is committing long term to Hanley and the job that Mattingly does. well, that and of course our stud pitcher's arm.

    Bartolo Colon Drawing Trade Interest

By Steve Adams [August 26, 2014 at 9:01am CDT]
Right-hander Bartolo Colon cleared waivers yesterday due to his 2015 salary, and the Mets are receiving “definite interest” in the 41-year-old, Andy Martino of the New York Daily News tweeted last night. By clearing waivers, Colon became eligible to be traded to any team, but interested parties do have some “trepidation” regarding his $11MM salary for 2015. This morning, Martino has a full column published with further details on the interest in Colon.
Martino spoke with one AL executive who expects the Angels, Dodgers and Royals to be the most active teams in the Colon market, though as Martino notes, Kansas City might not be able to afford the aging righty. The Mets were said to be willing to eat about $2MM of the remaining salary on Colon’s contract in late July, and nothing has changed on that front at this time, Martino reports. Were the Mets to absorb that much money and then wait until Aug. 31 to move Colon (thereby minimizing the financial commitment for a rival club), Colon would be owed $10.52MM for September 2014 (plus the playoffs) and the entirety of the 2015 campaign.
The Mets are interested in not only clearing the bulk of Colon’s salary but also in receiving a decent return in terms of prospects, which further complicates the situation.

    sorry guys
i can't buy into the colon argument
if it were for just this year i'd probably be on board
but committing to a (then) 42 y/o starter for 2015?
especially with what the mets are asking in return
if we weren't willing to part with top prospects for price/hamels et al, then no way for buttholo

i seriously doubt the Mets are asking for the same sort of return that TB and PHI wanted for their aces

Colon has put together a few nice starts in a row, but struggled mightily for most of the season. He has put up a mix of great starts and some real stinkers. He hasn't been terrible which is not what I was trying to portray, but he is owed $11 mil next season at 42 after what will likely be his worst season in 7 years, which means that yes he is having a down year. It also isn't just about Colon, there is a solid crop of starting pitching that will likely be available that they may be looking to pursue(De La Rosa, Lester, Santana, Scherzer, Shields) along with some solid back of the rotation options as well that could be cheaper and better short term fillers. Don't get me wrong, if the team were to get Colon I wouldn't be upset, I was just saying what the rumor was and it is understandable why.

I'm just concerned about who will be the 4th starter in the playoffs when it's inevitably necessary.
