Even then, worst case scenario, I wouldn’t be opposed to having him back on a 1-year deal for $17MMish. It’ll mostly depend on how he performs this season whether management offers it or not, but I feel like it’s a win-win for the Dodgers if they do.

There are only 3 catchers who make more than QO money. Right now Grandal is the 11th highest paid catcher for 2018. I don’t see how he gets a QO. There’s no money in playing catcher, the tools of ignorance indeed.

Grandal is gonna get the QO unless he has just an abysmal year. The reason this offseason is so shitty is teams are trying to set themselves up to spend big next year and try to have the best farm possible to be alluring to FA's.... except for the Orioles, nobody knows what the fuck they are doing. The Dodgers will have no problem offering the QO if he has another 2.5+WAR season(that's the type of player he is) and nor should they. He is generally regarded as a top tier catcher with one of the more dangerous bats at the position. He also knows that the Dodgers have a guy who could potentially take time away from him and bring his value down in the event he does return on the QO. The team would probably look at him potentially taking the QO as a "hey, it's only money" scenario as they should be willing to spend more freely(especially on guys on 1 year contracts) a year from now.

If he plays well, he’ll get a QO. Since 2015, Fangraphs has him as the third most valuable catcher in baseball behind Posey and Realmuto. Catcher is a premium position and someone desperate for one will pay it.

Someone mentioned a Lucroy comp, but Lucroy has 1 great year in 2016 sandwiched in-between 2 meh years in 2015 & 2017. Yaz has been consistent ever since he has been a Dodger.

Philly is 1 NL team I could see forking over 4/50-60 for Yasmani, they just bought a couple QO guys this offseason.
They're trying to make their move and he could have a blast in their park.
They may even be willing to trade for him if they're in the race in July.
Philly reminds me of Toronto, market size, TV money to work with, when they thought they were ready to make a push it was nothing for them to beat LAD out for Russ Martin.
Some of these catchers have been having shit luck right as they're on the cusp of hitting FA..Wieters and Ramos.
That's the cautionary tale for Yasmani..he obviously wants to be more like Martin, just duplicate another productive year with 450+ PAs and he should be golden

It will really depend on how Alfaro responds after the big year he had. Horrible K/BB numbers, but just about everything else was great. I think Yaz gets attention from an AL club where he primarily catches, but also will play 1B or DH so teams can keep his bat in the lineup when he is on one of his torrid streaks.

If by "consistent" you mean incredibly streaky, you'd be right. In all 3 seasons, he's had at least 2 bad months (< .700 OPS, for a guy whose main tool is his power, that's pretty bad) and let's not forget, he's basically a platoon player. Yes, injuries have obviously played a role, but that certainly shouldn't be an excuse and if anything should motivate them to NOT give him more money.

He has been consistent. Having bad streaks is not that uncommon for C/SS/CF.
If you play any of those positions and you can put up decent numbers every month you end up becoming very rich very soon.
If Grandal could do in his bad months what he does in his good months he would be a superstar at his position.
As he is he is a pretty good catcher though.
Definitely in the top 10 in the game.
    Nothing to sneeze at.
Specially when you don't have to rely on him for 500 at bats.

Meaning that at the end of the year, he has had consistent WAR totals.

Only if it beans the hitter in the head and knocks him unconscious.

Jharel Cotton has a strained UCL, probably going to need TJ. Yeesh, Dodgers top pitching prospects have a bad post-trade track record.

That is why you hype them up and trade them for something you need.
If you are a championship level club you dont wait to hit the lottery on a pitching prospect.
You go out and buy them.
Hitters on the other hand you can fuck around with and play the odds.
