The New York Mets did the right thing in trading slugger Marlon Byrd. He's about to turn 36 years old, he's having a career year, he's a free agent at the end of the season and the Mets ain't goin' no place in 2013, as they say in the big city.

And, by packaging Byrd with catcher John Buck to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, the Mets managed to get the Bucs' No. 10 prospect, infielder Dilson Herrera.

All good. Almost. There's only one problem, and it's not even really a problem. Just an inconvenient coincidence that ... looks bad. You see, the Mets play at home Tuesday, which also happens to be Marlon Byrd T-shirt night at Citi Field.

    Oh, no, that's so Mets!

Deadspin, of course, made note of this first.

It's awkward enough when a player is traded and he merely switches clubhouses, like what happened with David DeJesus going from the Cubs to the Nats while Washington was in town playing at Wrigley Field.

In this case, we'll have a stadium half-filled with people wearing Marlon Byrd T-shirts, and Marlon Byrd won't be anywhere nearby. He'll be at PNC Park, playing for the Pirates, if he gets there in time.

The shite shirts have Byrd's name and No. 6 on the back, with a pair of wings and "Let it Fly" written on the front. Well, the Mets weren't going to let Byrd fly via free agency.

Just as some fans were about to fricassee the team for trading Buck because he was a good guy for hugging Matt Harvey on Monday night, here we have another case of bad timing. If only the Mets had dealt Byrd before the non-waiver deadline, weeks before the shirt giveaway, they could have canceled it and offered refunds. Sent the shirts in the mail. Come up with another shirt. Lucas Duda shirt night. Or even done the Byrd event anyway, and laughed about it.

They can laugh Tuesday night, but it will still seem like the joke is on the Mets.

Like the Phillies firing Manuel on the night he was supposed to be celebrated.
