The Dodgers have a deal in place to acquire right-hander Bud Norris from the Braves, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Norris should step right into an injury-plagued rotation that saw Clayton Kershaw hit the disabled list with a back injury earlier today. Norris last pitched on June 26, so he could start in place of Kershaw tomorrow. :lowscore:
Not a fan, but there's this: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/no-but-seriously-check-out-bud-norris/
Come on now. It's what we got for Caleb Dirks which nobody knows except a few guys on here. He's found a pitch that has been really good lately and he's only started using it in the last month. Happens to be the favorite pitch of a certain closer we have. Cutter madness!!!
Great trade. The Braves know how to teach thats for sure. They probably showed Norris what was wrong and fixed him with that new cutter he throws. Now he is a more complete pitcher that they were able to spin off. Sure maybe once the league finds out about his new pitch they will adjust, but maybe it will be just good enough to make him not suck against that side of the plate. Either way its a great move to get someone thats playing really well and is on the upswing while not giving up anything of value in our system. Of course the Braves might turn those two guys into something good by fixing their problems too.
Second half rotation of Kershaw, Maeda, Urias, Norris and whatever is healthy from Wood/Ryu/Anderson/McCarthy sounds promising. Who knows, maybe Brock turns out to be good after his second start. And maybe they decide to keep Urias up and not worry about his innings.
Pitcher Bud Norris acquired in trade with Braves By Bill Plunkett | The Press Enterprise — UPDATED 2 minutes ago MILWAUKEE — The Dodgers are set to plug the latest hole in their starting rotation by acquiring right-hander Bud Norris from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for two minor-league pitchers. The Dodgers also received Double-A outfielder Dian Toscano, a player to be named later and cash considerations from the Braves in exchange for Class-A left-hander Philip Pfeifer (a third-round draft pick out of Vanderbilt last year) and Double-A right-hander Caleb Dirks. Dirks, a Woodcrest Christian High graduate, was acquired by the Dodgers from the Braves in a trade for an international bonus slot last year. Norris, 31, is 3-7 with a 4.22 ERA for the Braves this season including 3-5 with a 5.02 ERA in 10 starts. But he has a 2.15 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .200 average in his past five starts (four of them Braves wins). The Braves are in the midst of a homestand and Norris was scheduled to start Friday. The Dodgers need a starter to take Clayton Kershaw’s turn in the rotation on Friday at Dodger Stadium against the Colorado Rockies. Norris is making $2.5 million this year and will be a free agent this off-season. In eight big-league seasons with four teams (the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, Baltimore Orioles and Braves), Norris is 59-75 with a 4.43 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, primarily as a starter. His best season was 2014 when he went 15-8 with a 3.65 ERA for the Orioles. Toscano is a 27-year-old Cuban who batted .226 in 58 games for the Braves' Double-A affiliate this season. In order to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for Norris, the Dodgers designated Triple-A left-hander Ian Thomas for assignment.
Urias has maybe two more starts. Really need a legitimate 2, especially with the Kershaw stuff, unless both Ryu and McCarthy come back.
It's a sign that we aren't going to acquire anyone but washed up bums or minor leaguers from the Braves
norris is fine as a replacement for bolsinger but we still need a legitimate #2 or #3 that said... if kersh is down for long, we're fucked regardless hoping putting him on the 15 day dl isn't just posturing by the nerds :farhan:
I don't think he's unadulerated trash...let's give the guy a couple of shots at it before we crucify him. What other choice is there, really? At least he's a vet and not one of the walking wounded, and that is a plus on this SR. Who knows? This guy could wind up at least as good as Kazmir or whoever in this mishmash rotation. And he did OK in the ATL bp...so we could possibly move meat Hatcher somewhere for a back up batboy. Eventually. Or for whoever.
That ship has sailed brother. Out of port about 3 months ago. Gonna take moving a bunch of talent for that to happen...when we could have bought it for cash, which we have a bunch of...but not quite enough, I guess. Lol.
