LOVE the Dodgers 1st round pick tonight. Bobby Miller, RHP out of Louisville was one of the kids that had his draft stock hurt by the shortened season. Had turned some heads early on. FB sits 95-99 occasionally touching triple digits and he maintains the velo throughout. Big boy at 6’5” with a decent slider and two forms of a change from the sounds of it. Needs some refinement which is the big one here as that is where it gets interesting. His mechanics are messy, but he’s super athletic and has shown that he can adapt and repeats the delivery. That’s a good sign that they could clean him up where there is also belief that he could find a bit more in the tank. Louisville had him working down in the zone with the FB as he has a diving 2 seamer with similar velo as his 4 seamer. Feelings are that they’ll ditch the 2 seamer and go heavy 4S Up in the zone where the numbers show him having some elite company if he can locate it. Many say he has a very high floor with back end reliever potential with a strong likelihood to stay there, but also the skill set to maintain a ceiling of a front end starter.

Yeah I like this pick. We need big RHP with Velo in the system and being a 21 year old college kid, he can develop on a fast track if they can clean him up a bit and it sticks. Good shit

This is from an ESPN article on the first round......

    29. Los Angeles Dodgers: Bobby Miller, RHP, Louisville

Who is Miller? Another big right-hander (6-foot-5), Miller has some of the best heat in the draft, with a fastball that sits 94-98, although it's more of a heavy sinking fastball. He took a no-hitter into the ninth inning in an NCAA tournament game against East Carolina, when he flashed a potentially dominant slider/cutter. The command isn't always there and the effort in his delivery and long arm action has some scouts believing he ends up in the bullpen.

Why the Dodgers took him here: The Dodgers have shown they know exactly what they're doing with late first-round picks, considering its where they tend to end up picking thanks to their success on the field. Miller fits some of the things that seem to work well for them as a big-time arm from a major program. He isn't nearly as polished as Reid Detmers, his Louisville rotation mate who went earlier in the first round, but there's no question which starter has better pure stuff and the Dodgers are exactly the type of team that can get him to harness it. -- Mullen

Wow...baseball talk. Reads really well, and gets back to what it's all about. Here, anyway.
Nice alternative to disease, who was right or wrong about it, and the politics of it all.

This kid also seems to have the attitude you want as a starter. Very Buehleresque(who is also his favorite player). Will be interesting to watch Miller and Lewis in the years ahead.

A lot to like with Clayton Beeter (lol) & Jake Vogel as well, I spent very little time on this draft class once we knew it wasn't gonna be 30-40 rounds, but it just happened that Miller, Beeter & Vogel were names I had in mind for the first 3 picks.

    Pretty good given the circumstances.

The Dodgers have signed one UDFA thus far and it is someone that was once considered a top 200 prospect in the game, but has steadily declined since going to college. I had guessed the Dodgers would be one of the best setup teams to land a lot of talent in this stretch, but the early going has the Royals already landing an solid haul of 5 top 500 prospects AND a top rated undrafted senior. There were more than a few takes by folks that felt the Dodgers had one of the most distinct advantages due to the clubs strong development track record, however in the 24 hours since the signings started to become public. There have been a multitude of reports that say that players are focusing on weaker farm systems depth wise as they are aware of the oncoming thinning out of minor league baseball. Not sure if it matters much anyway anymore since the owners are just trying to kill the game.

I admire you for striving to keep this aspect of MLB relevant ... but you must realize the window is closing, brother.

God bless you for trying ... but the body is about to be officially declared dead. Some doctor is going to call it,man ....

Yeah, I am starting to believe that there will not be a season. Since this is all about prospects, it really won't impact this season anyway, so it still has some interest.

After a league wide poll, Gavin Lux was selected as the rookie that will have the biggest impact in the shortened season.

Dodgers went 6 for 6 and signed each of their 2020 draft picks. Very intriguing draft.

One prospect name to watch that we have not heard much about is Ryan Pepiot. The orgs 3rd round pick in 2019 was perceived by some as a value pick that was destined to a bullpen role. Armed with arguably the best change up in the class, his other stuff was relatively pedestrian, but that 70 change helped him rack up the K's. Once joining the org, his overall stuff improved including the fastball jumping up a couple ticks and the slider taking a step forward. He is a big thick dude that sat 94-95 in his outing during intrasquads and he devastated our major league lineup with that change of his. His fastball has a high spin rate and if he can live in those mid-90's he could become another very intriguing starting pitching prospect. If the FB can only do the 94-96 thing in abbreviated outings, he could make himself very useful out of the pen as soon as this season.

So we have an update from BA, but it isn't anything too special. They did mini blurbs on our top 10 and couple notes on others. I will hit some points
    • Ruiz showed up to camp a good bit stronger than before and was driving the ball with my authority in ST. He is yet to show up for undisclosed reasons.
    • Gonsolin was sent to the alternate site to get built up.
    • Gray is now sitting 94-98 and has seen improvement in his slider. Still has a bit to go with the change, but the other two pitches are good enough that the club thinks he will impact the pen this year.
    • Busch showed up to summer camp leaner and more agile which has impressed the org to the point that they think he can handle 2B.
    • The org is incredibly thin on OF prospects, but the ones they do have, have very high ceilings.
    • A lot of eyebrows have been raised about the Dodgers inclusions of certain players on their player pool. Jackson, Pepiot, Carrillo and Michael Grove do not have the background to make one think that they will be useful this season.
    • Morgan Cooper had his second shoulder surgery in 2 years last August. 2017 second round pick is still yet to throw a pitch for the club, but he has supposedly begun throwing bullpens without setbacks.

Updated the post with MLB Pipelines mid season top 30.
    • Nice write up on Miller. They think he could be an impact pitcher both as a starter or reliever. Control will be the ultimate factor with him.
    • They LOVE Beeter. Their evaluators said he possessed potentially the best curveball in the draft and some thought his slider was even better. His fastball was improving every game and was hitting 98 before the shutdown. His top 3 pitches are so good that he never needs his change, but they gave it a solid grade. If his brief final season at Tech was the real him and not an anomaly, they think he could be the steal of the draft.
    • Vogel sounds a lot like Jeren Kendall, but they were able to nab him early enough that maybe they can mold him into a player that can actually hit. Speed is ++ and his arm is at least +. Makes a lot of contact, but rarely ever actually drives the ball, but the feeling is that the development department could fix that.
    • Knack made his way onto the list as well. He is another guy who's stuff took a leap forward this year so if it works out, he could be really something. Fastball ticked way up while also touching 98 and worked in the mid-90's. Secondaries need work, but there seems to still be room for him to improve.

With May and Gonsolin graduating, of the prospects currently on the Dodgers Top 30 according to MLBPipeline, 20 are either on the active roster(3) or at the Alt site(17).

Man, teams are calling up top prospects left and right while Lux continues to sit at the Alt site and Hernandez treks on as a terrible option offensively at 2B. That is really not good to see for him as rumors are that players and coaches at the alt sites are complaining that this option is inadequate. It is helping guys that are considered further away to a degree, but players that were felt to be on the doorstep to the bigs are seeing stunted growth as they are the ones going against usually much lesser competition. Really hope we are able to see Lux here soon and it is the guy we have been hearing all about over the last couple of seasons.

kike still has value. Can play + defense at any position. Lux would also taking a back seat to Taylor. So he seems to be stuck on bench anyway. Lux late arrival and performance in Summer Camp didn’t help.

Kike trade? Wouldn’t get many offers since he is a FA.

Nah, not talking about trading Hernandez as his trade value would be pretty low and he is valuable as you said for his defense. Thing is that Lux's D at second is considered incredibly valuable too, so there would not be a huge loss there. If Lux comes up, it is to play everyday. He would not be behind Taylor, nor should he be. Taylor is having a decent year, but Lux has a significantly higher upside offensively than Taylor. My message was more hope that Lux is not still looking atrocious at the alt site than to just bring him up for the sake of bringing him up. Me wanting to see him up would mean that he had turned the corner enough to get the call. Roberts said he was close a couple of weeks ago, but there has not been a peep since.

Roberts' silence on the subject might speak volumes.
