Papelbon has been fantastic this season: 1.21 ERA, 0.86WHIP, 22 saves, 0 HR allowed

    • The Dodgers could potentially look to acquire Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon, according to a tweet from Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com. A source tells Saxon that he expects Los Angeles to pursue the 33-year-old righty, who is carrying a 1.21 ERA with 8.0 K/9 against 2.2 BB/9 in his third year in Philly. Long considered one of the worst contracts in baseball, Papelbon’s deal is actually looking less onerous as he continues to produce results and its timeline shortens. On top of his $13MM salary this season, Papelbon is owed $13MM next year and comes with a vesting option at that same rate for 2016. The option would become guaranteed if he finishes 55 games next year or 100 total between 2014-15. He has topped 50 games finished in each of the last seven years and is on pace to do so once again.

With all the jokes about Papelbon sucking, I immediately said pass. But after looking up his numbers and what he's done lately, I would love to add him. He's having a great season.

Yeah he's having a good season. He is probably due for some regression this year, his BABIP is damn low, but he'd be our 3rd best reliever easily (our 2nd best righty). The problem lies more in salary and attitude (is he gonna be whiny if he doesn't close, especially with an option that vests in 2016 only if he is closing?)

If getting Pap somehow rids us of either Crawford or Ethier, I'm fine with a deal.

    Papelbon contract:
2014: maybe 6.5 mil left? (rough estimate)
    2015: 13 mil
    2016: 13 mil if finishes 100 games in 2014-2015 or 55 games in 2015 (He's finished 30 this year)

Crawford: Owed about 10 mil left (so a difference of 3-4 mil) in 2014
    2015: Owed 20.5 mil (7.5 mil difference)
    2016: 20.75 mil (so a 7.75 difference if Papelbon's option vests)
    2017: 21 mil (a 21 mil difference)

So with Car'ls contract, it's a 40.25 or so million difference in salary if option vests for Papelbon (which is a dangerous assumption if Papelbon is on our team and Kenley is a closer... Only way it'd vest is if he's our closer or we then trade him in the offseason?)
The difference in salary is 53.25 if the option does NOT vest

So, we'd still need to pitch in money and probably give up a prospect along with it. There isn't another bad contract from them we could take to even some stuff out

With Ethier it's different also cause he's a bit longer.

Ethier 2014: 7.75 owed, so a difference of lets say 1.5 mil
    2015: 18 mil, difference of 5 mil
2016: 18 mil (difference of 5 mil or 18 mil depending on vesting option)
    2017: 17.5 mil (difference of 17.5 mil)
2018: 2.5 mil guaranteed, 17.5 mil club option. (Let's say the 2.5 mil is all we talk about, if the club wants to take on 17.5 mil thats their deal)

So a difference of 31.5 mil if option for Papelbon is vesting. 44.5 mil difference if option for Papelbon doesn't vest.

Papelbon's an instant upgrade over everybody except Jansen. if Wilson can regain form maybe he'd be at Papelbon's level, but that's about it as far as the others go. i don't give a shit if he's a douche..all i care about is what they give up for him and that he's been good.

and btw, Dave Stewart is talking again..saying Kemp is open to a trade if he's not gonna play everyday. and that's all i'd need to hear if i were the LAD front office. the ONLY reason i wouldn't trade Kemp is because it'd shake up the clubhouse and may have effect over the next month. and that's no good because they just got this thing going again. HOWEVER, if it's Kemp that's saying he's willing to leave the clubhouse/teammates and go play elsewhere..well then that changes everything. nobody's gonna mourn Kemp if he wants out. so peace out. in fact, guys will probably be happy for SVS and his opportunity to take over in LF since everybody loves SVS. or Guerrero makes it up and he takes over in LF and SVS stays in center. or..whatthefuckever..the team will live on without singles-hitter Kemp.

Matt Kemp isn’t asking the Dodgers to trade him. But he isn’t necessarily opposed to the idea, either.
The outfielder’s agent, former major-league pitcher Dave Stewart, told FOX Sports on Wednesday that Kemp again wants to be an everyday center fielder, something that isn’t in his immediate future with the Dodgers.

“Whatever they want to do we’re favorable to, as long as it gives him an opportunity to play every day,” Stewart said. “He’d like to eventually go back to center field. He’s not opposed to right or left. But his hope at some point is to get back to center.”

a HUGE side benefit of kemp leaving would be never having to hear dave stewart quoted again.

actually, if Stewart can get our front office to move Kemp..i'd like to sign Stewart up as Crawford's/Ethier's agent and deal with him some more. Lol

Stewart is just an ass clown. "He isn't wanting a trade but isn't opposed to it either." What kind of stupid shit is that to say and make public? He's playing everyday for the most part and hitting 4th or 5th most days. What the fuck more does he want? Play a position he no longer knows how to play? Trade his ass to a constant cellar dweller. Kemp and his agent are going to be fucking whiners the rest of this contract if they dont get their way.

Hey Dave.....tell your client he should probably take his $20 mil a year he's robbing the ball club of and just STFO. You too for that matter.....

That's pretty much the problem with relievers.

    They're shaky year to year.

I understand that the club would still have to pitch in a significant amount in a deal, but I'd rather see the club spend that large amount of money on a position of need and not on our 5th/6th best OF'er who is blocking one of our top prospects.

i bet it kind of goes like this. dave sits around without much to do all day so he calls matt.
a selfish rich matt complains about things not going his way and it must be someones fault.
stewart makes press release and goes home thinking he's done his job.
stewart blows his boyfriend when he gets home and they do gay shit together.

Nobody wants our current players just our future ones, stop dreaming. To me Seager and Urias are untouchable any other specs are fair game.

How about we complain at Stewart for coming out and saying this shit, as opposed to Kemp?
