This just proves that so much of what you hear during this is bullshit.

    - Bryce wants to play close to home.
    - Bryce is said not be a fan of Gabe Kapler
    - Bryce is said to not be a fan of the city of Philadelphia
    - Bryce is willing to take a discount to play on the west coast.

The press is now the least trusted institution in America according to a survey conducted by Columbia University. No surprise. There's no consequence for reporting bullshit and anyone can call themselves a reporter. All speculation, anonymous sources, and sensationalism

Imagine if we signed or traded for players that wanted and lobbied to get here.

Lakers and Dodger... Common denominator = magic.

I do feel as though this is the beginning of the end of their run. I can see another division or two but yet tides seem to be shifting.

I agree. When you are talking about those dollar figures, you don't sign a lifetime deal to play somewhere you aren't happy over a 10% tax. I know it's a lot of money, but he's never going to notice it in the end. The West Coast thing was clearly used for leverage and that's it. He's more than happy to go to Philly.

They are going to kick themselves if they don’t try to focus on pitching and make a push that way. If you are passing on a potent lineup, at least try to get shutdown pitching.

The other thing is that the tax issue is overblown all the time.

My understanding about salary in the pro leagues is that you get taxed at the in the state in which you are playing, not your home state.

So if you are playing a 4 game series in Kansas City, those 4 days worth of salary is taxed at the Missouri state tax rate...and so on and so on. Anyway, that’s what it was before the new tax law. Not sure if things changed.

Yes, the majority of your time is spent at home, but over a baseball season and 162 games, it becomes a real mixed bag. If taxes were an issue, he’d play in Texas.

If the Dodgers really were offering only 3 or 4 years for Bryce after giving 5 to Pollock, there has to be something there. @Gebbeth mentioned Harper's desire for security and I do find it weird that the club saw something that they did not like long term potentially about him. Maybe they think physically he is not going to hold up or that there was more to the last couple of seasons. To me we could easily cry cheap if they were willing to go to say 6-8 years, but this 3-4 at an insane AAV says something else to me. I don't think they believe he is going to hold up for the long term or they were worried about his attitude. IDK, it still fucking sucks and does not give me much hope for Trout in a couple of years.

I wouldn't say that. They are being prudent with money, so we will have the cash to plug in all the Pollocks and Kellys we want year after year to go with a good farm system. Should keep us in the hunt for squeaking out division titles or wild card spots indefinitely. We'll be long shots for World Series wins though, since we will never have a true superstar in his prime. We had no business being the World Series last year TBH. The only way we win a WS right now is if Buehler and Urias go on an epic postseason run. That's it. Good luck to us.

Their pitching is not the problem. They have one of the best young pitchers in the game, one of the deepest farm systems in regards to solid pitching and are generally regarded as one of the top one or two developmental organizations in the game. They legit have 5 pitchers in the upper minors that have front of the rotation stuff. Which is all you can ask for at this point for many of those guys.

Having to choose between Kershaw and Harper when you could functionally only have one and stay under the tax, and choosing Kershaw, is the dumbest fucking shit for people so smart

I work with a tax guy (and Dodgers fan), and I asked him about the inter-state tax issue. He said it depends on the states, but typically you are taxed by both states and you will receive a credit on your home state taxes for the amount you paid in the away state. What that boils down to is your realized tax rate will be equal to your home state. So it actually is as simple as comparing the CA tax rate to the PA tax rate for the full contract amount.

I mean... Corey Seager was generally regarded as one of the top players in baseball before his injury and he isn't even 25 yet. Let's pump the breaks on that one... Not to mention that Cody Bellinger is still only 23 as well. Those two guys are capable of being in the upper echelon of the games top performers.

I know, I'm venting, I just hate life right now. Technically we've had Kershaw through his prime too.
