In 9 years, his ERA has only been below 4 twice and even more importantly, he is injury prone. Topping 140 innings a whopping twice.
Too many years..but an upgrade over Haren for sure. FO making moves today..they must have read all the bitching in here and stepped up their nerd game.. Sky isn't falling just yet bkitches...
Made 32 starts last year, his FIP was 3.82 during the awful stint with AZ last season, obviously he was great with the Yankees. Now, is 4 years too much? Yes, but for the first two, I like it.
yea i've got your logic right here - http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf...ins_adjustment_thats_helped_him_dominate.html NEW YORK — It's still unclear whether some of Yankees general manager Brian Cashman's midseason gambles will pay off. Chase Headley had been solid. Stephen Drew hasn't. Martin Prado has been OK. So has Chris Capuano. One that's obviously paid off? Brandon McCarthy. After throwing a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 win over the Astros Thursday, the tall righty improved to 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA since coming to the Yankees in an early-July trade with the Diamondbacks in exchange for lefty starter Vidal Nuno. But things weren't going so well for McCarthy before the deal. The 31-year-old was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA before donning pinstripes for the first time. On Thursday, McCarthy said the biggest difference between his time in Arizona and in New York has been that the Yankees have encouraged him to reincorporate his four-seamer and cutter into his regular repertoire. Here's how McCarthy said the change went down. In Arizona, the staff wanted him to trim his pitch selection. So he tended to favor his out pitch, or get "sinker happy," as he said. "There are places that have philosophies and they like to try and and get guys to do certain things," McCarthy said. While he was never directly told to stop throwing his cutter and your-seamer, McCarthy said, it became clear they wanted him to stick with his sinker. The Yankees went in a different direction. McCarthy said when he was acquired by the Yankees they told him they traded for the pitcher they had seen post a 17-15 record and 3.29 ERA in Oakland. "It was exciting when I got here and they said, 'We want you to start throwing the cutter more,'" McCarthy said. "It wasn't a discussion of why we aren't throwing it. It was just, 'Hey, we want this. And this is what we traded for.' And there was a confidence in that regard where I've got something new to get guys out with." Catcher Brian McCann enforced the change. McCarthy gave up three runs in his first inning as a Yankee in a start against Cleveland July 9. After the frame, McCann approached McCarthy, telling him to stop relying so heavily on his sinker. "And that's him being able to see and adjust and he just has that experience to tell me where to throw it," McCarthy said. "Then it became a reins-off thing." Meaning: McCarthy was now free to mix his pitches. And, since then, it's stuck. "Now I just have more options," McCarthy said. "The key to screwing up hitters is different movement, different timing. If all I'm looking at is one similar movement, it's difficult to throw in a count where the hitter is in the lead. (For example,) a 2-1 count, a 3-1 count. I would look to one thing. Now I can change directions and move it and it gives me more options. I can still throw sinkers in those counts, but it's not so much automatic." and that's what we're getting. a guy who's figured it out.
I can't wait for the next time we go to the lair, and Chief and back2back have their slap fight to settle their differences.
Half a season doesn't mean he's figured it out. Still no mention of his obvious durability issues by you.
no, half a season doesn't mean he's figured it out. however, that article said far more than " half a season " in it. maybe you need to read it again? 175K to 33 walks for ALL of last season..not half the season. yes, he's had some durability issues..however, 3 out of the last 4 years he's giving you the work load you'd expect from a #4 or #5..pretty much around what Haren's done the last 3yrs in terms of innings. McCarthy misses bats. the rest of that shit you're talkin about was from 5-8 years ago. let it go. some pitchers find themselves later in their careers. get on the bus to crank the party or get your ass outta the way
