Until we Acquire a 1Bman, Loney needs to start against most RH Pitching

I was saying this earlier in the season, and it's been sparked again tonight. We cannot keep compromising defense for offense, unless the offensive trade off is significant. The difference between Rivera and Loney is not big enough to sit Loney against right handed pitching.

Loney is OPSing just about the same as Rivera, and his OPS+ is actually higher. No surprise; both of them are basically singles hitters at this point. I would be fine using Rivera consistently if he was hitting significantly better than Loney. But neither of them are very good. .346 SLG from Rivera, with only 3 HR, hardly any extra base hits, and an on-base of .288. He cannot play a LICK of defense. Any throw in the dirt is gonna hit off the heel of his glove, he can barely field a ground ball, and it just aint worth it.

I'm as big of a Loney hater as it gets. But the offensive trade off is a wash. Until we find a permanent 1Bman, we aren't going to get much offensively regardless. So let Loney play superb defense and hit against right handers.

I think Don's desire to let Loney know he's garbage is awesome. Finally taking a stand. But he's replacing him with Rivera. Who also sucks. And can't play defense.

He'll probably hit a GSlam tonight since I said this, but I'll take my chances.

 

I disagree. I don't care who's at 1B against who on what day. Loney is no longer worthy of starting.

Oh and I'm sure Rivera's defense has just killed us right? I don't remember one game where his defense has cost us the game. He made a good play last night to save Jansen's ass. I remember plenty of Loney at bats that killed rallies though.

No, but if one isn't overwhelmingly better than the other, why not let the guy who plays spectacular defense play against right handers?What makes Rivera so much more worthy than Loney if they are producing at a similar rate? Because Loney is a disappointment and Rivera is playing closer to what's expected?

And I hope a big leaguer can make that play last night, not to take anything away from him.

Rivera and Loney are hitting very very similar. Just because Loney is more frustrating (due to perceived talent) he is the one who rides pine every game? Rivera produces the same and plays every day? Notice Loney isn't in there...even as a late inning defensive replacement? That's two days in a row. Maybe something is wrong with him or he had a fight with Donnie, or something weird.

 

Ethier is making 85 million dollars to be a starting OFer and cleanup hitter. Jansen just made me not care anymore though.

But Loney and Rivera came into the game with 11 GIDP, and 10 GIDP, respectively. And Loney has like 50+ more at bats.
