I'll put it at best case one month, probably 6-8 weeks? I'm completely guessing though.

He threw a bullpen yesterday and has been throwing mostly bullpens and simulated games. I'll say he's close to going to a minor league team, and given he needs a spring training amount of time to be ready, it's about 4-5 starts to be MLB ready?

I'm also curious when they think Pablo Hernandez could pitch in the MLB

Wait McCarthy was a #5 when we signed him? That's not accurate.

Shields is doing decent in SD but his number aren't eye popping... Brett Anderson has been better.

I think that Shields is a #4 pitcher, who is not reliable. I exaggerated, sure, but I'd feel much better with a 1-3 with Shields in it, more than Anderson. Shields is doing what he does; eats innings, 3.5 ERA with a 1.2 WHIP. As a number #3 that is great.

Obviously if Ryu is healthy, he'd be a #4, which would be awesome.

Anderson has been really good. He's making a strong case to be our #3. Hopefully his body doesn't take a shit. Still need another SP tho

Only problem is that he's not getting paid like a #3 and he's old as shit towards the end of that contract.

I dunno. Regardless of how Anderson is pitching, I would have been happier if Ryu was healthy or was just getting healed-up to play some part of this season.

Regardless of how you feel about Sheilds, the fact is we need at least 1 and possibly 2 more solid starters, and if Sheilds is somehow going to be in the mix for any trade, we need that if we want to win this year or next.

I think getting Cueto would be cool because no one is giving up anyone elite for 2 months of that guy.

Or Urias and friends for Sonny Gray.

Shields helps you win in the post season? That's breaking news. I only remember Shields being shit in the post season. He's turned over a new leaf at 34yrs old?

The money spent on Mccarthy could have been thrown at Andrew Miller who is having a tremendous season. But hindsight is always 20-20

Like I said, would you want to go into the playoffs with our current rotation, or if Sheilds were available, would you try to get him? Getting to the playoffs will be equally important, by the way, and by no means guaranteed as of late.

Bottom line. Is our rotation better with or without Sheilds?

That was pretty clear without hindsight. The McCarthy signing is/was/will be shit.

Don't you get it? It is the DSP poster's money which is being spent, so they have to be "smart" about it. We can't want Shields because his contract wouldn't be great a few years down the line (a 4-year deal though, so really?) and because GGP should make another $30M over the course of the next few years, those poor guys.

Shields is getting paid like a number#2/#3, but what do you care? Are you paying? It's a 4-year deal and he is 1.5 years older than McCarthy. McCarthy will be pitching for a solid 2 years of the 4 years, so if you'd like to use $ as an issue, then we paid $48M for 2 years of McCarthy. Solid value there.
