The Chicago Cubs have hired former pitcher Ted Lilly as a front office special assistant, the club announced on Tuesday.

Lilly retired in November after 15 seasons in the major leagues, including three and a half with the Cubs. He won a career-high 17 games with the Cubs in 2008. A two-time All-Star, Lilly was 130-113 with a 4.14 ERA with Montreal, Oakland, Toronto, the New York Yankees, the Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lilly, who was designated for assignment by the Dodgers in July after struggling with injuries, went to winter ball in Venezuela in November hoping the back and shoulder issues were behind him and would allow him to find a major league job. But he didn't feel right and made just one appearance before deciding to retire.

In his new role with the Cubs, Lilly will spend time with the club during spring training, visit the minor league affiliates during the season, evaluate amateur players leading up to the draft and perform professional scouting assignments.
