I've played chess my entire life since I was twelve. My favorite thing to do is teach newbies how to play. Most of them can beat me within a few months of playing daily. But it's very gratifying because many have gone on to play in tourneys and in clubs and they've become noteworthy. It's a glorious game. Even without the anal beads.
Humbling. I've gotten on streaks and thought I was going somewhere. Then games go by where I make stupid mistakes and get beaten by lesser players. I've taught my 8 & 6 yr old daughters to play. They're REALLY competitive. It's a little scary. It's an infectious game.
