Personally I can't stand the fans vote for all star game starters. Hate the subjectivity of the players and coaches votes and picks. Was Cal Ripken really the best SS/3B for all those years? So I thought, and you saber metrics guys go nuts with this, if you were to rank and award points based purely on stats what would those numbers be. Lets say the highest ranking BA in the league is worth 100 points whereas RBI's would get you a max point value of 25? The lowest ERA and whip the same. Anyway just thought it would be interesting to try and come up with a system to ensure the best players make the all star team and therefore give it some legitimacy once again. The first thing would be to rank stats based on order of importance, then we can move from there and award points based on those rankings. Could be fun, hell maybe we can even pitch it to MLB. I think it would be exciting to see which players will work their asses off to lead in one category or another to fight to make the AS game. Personally it's unwatchable and the fact the last place vagiants had 4? Players in the game is a travesty of subjectivity.
Just get rid of the stipulation of home field advantage. The all star game is an exhibition game and (should be) nothing more. I'm all for fixing voting, but get rid of that stupid stipulation too. And it's funny that the gnats had four players but only played one (Posey).
I'm not saying work within the existing flawed system but if we were to create a new system to ensure the best players are selected what system would that be?
fan voting is the problem and always will be players should vote, with the stipulation they can't vote for anyone on their team and abolish the "every team must have a representative" rule i hate the giants... but if their starting 9 are the best players, then so be it
I'm with irish on the players vote. They know who the best players are since they've played just about every team in their league once. But I don't think they'll ever get rid of fan voting. Maybe a combination of the two, but they'll never outright abolish it. And as for getting rid of the 'every team must have a representative', I have a feeling that'll never fly, since player know who really deserves it, even if they're not on a great team. If someone for the Astros is hitting .360 or is lights out on the mound, he'll get the recognition he deserves. That rule has never bothered me, since it's usually the managers who pick those players and they usually pick guys who deserve to be there, but don't have the media attention by playing in Kansas City or Houston. When it comes to saber metrics, I think the players won't care about that. Like I said, they know who really deserves it, and saber be damned.
I think you guys don't understand what I'm saying here. The system is stupid, how can we create a non subjective criteria to select all star players. For instance, the tennis hall of fame has certain goals that players must reach to get in. What goals should determine an all star.
2 Preliminary Prerequisites: A minimum amount of games must be set, and the team selection process doesn't happen until 2 weeks prior to the game. Starting Position Players: You put together 2 groups (2 representatives to a group). Group A) Ex Players Group B) SABR Guys A third party arbitrator hears the cases position by position from both sides and rules the starting lineup Reserves: Same arbitration process, EXCEPT... --Manager gets 1 Pick (Stops corruption at 1) --Players vote in 3 players --Commissioner 1 Pick (For the Puigs or retiring Ripkens of the world *If unused by commissioner, players get another pick) --Fans get the 1 player in the "Final vote" Pitchers: Same arbitration process as starters Players get to vote in 2 pitchers Manager has no say in pitchers selected, but is allowed to appoint starter and obviously manage the pen. In conclusion... Fans only get a couple votes The manager has no say in the starting players, and only gets to choose one player (a reserve) The players get 5 picks (2 pitchers, 3 reserves) The rest are chosen through am arb style selection process with ex players and SABR guys. The commissioner can make a pick for each team for storylines, marketing, etc. Perhaps a minimum OPS for each position to qualify but not really necessary if ex players and Sabr guys are making the pitches for each position.
To me OPS is pretty woat, instead I would use wOBA as a good indicator for offensive production WAR would probably be the best/most efficient way to create the AS rosters I'm sure the rosters wouldn't have the most popular names on them but it would factor fielding, hitting and baserunning to put the players that were having the best all around season to date on the team
I don't like the voting on the net thing...or twitter, or whatever. You should have to go to the ballpark, and punch the tickets oldschool. That will prevent the ballot stuffing by ahole SF fans.
I agree with whomever stated that its should be up to the players. I think the fans should get two votes--one pitcher and one hitter (and no, Kershaw cannot count as both. Perhaps, the fans should have one final vote for pitcher and hitter. In order to vote, you must mail in a vote form. I know it sounds archaic but it helps those not near an MLB stadium and makes people work. I think, no matter what, there will always be fan manipulation. But, I agree, technology is too easy to manipulate in order to jack with the vote. I do like the idea of the commissioner's office getting one vote for special circumstance. The home field advantage thing is moronic. Look at this years. Boche replaced Freeman with his RP (who never entered the game) instead of another hitter. Also, Leyland played like he wanted to win the whole thing--the NL not so much. If you want the AS game to mean something, give it stature. Perhaps, those chosen for the AS game wear a badge or something on their uniforms the following year. Give them something. It needs to be more than a popularity context and less of crap shoot.
My biggest problem with the fan vote is that if the guy that wins the fan vote gets hurt. The next guy with the most fan votes should go. It should not be some fucktard midgets manager named bitchy who gets to pick the FAN fucking vote. Its the WHOLE fuckin reason we have a fan vote and they just get rid of it by letting a dumbass manager pick the last guy. Why it has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The fans should get a vote, but I do agree the players are the best people to pick the players that play. they play against them they know whos doing what. I like the idea that they can't vote for the players on their team that would force them to vote for the right players. Other then that, I think its a good process. Its the whole reason I didn't watch the All star game but from the score I must not have missed much.
I kinda don't mind the fans voting, just wish it wasn't so "stay at home and sit on a computer all day" based. Wish they could integrate something where you had to use a code if you are at the game and/or watching it on television. I think it'd be smart to weigh the votes of people at the game more than those sitting at home. Make sure its people actually who semi-care. But making the players decide isn't much better than the fans; a lot of them don't really catch up with individuals (I've read about them admitting they don't know much outside of a few players they follow). Theres some other things I wish they would add, maybe like special rookie, or a slot or two for recognition of some old fart past his prime. I also really truly wish they didn't have so many relievers. That to me makes it suck. Maybe a few closers, but geez, making starter and relievers on equal grounds is fucking brutal. Delabar can get in but not Kuroda? I mean come on. That to me is bull shit. Also, maybe (weird idea), I think they should have a select few minor leaguers (top prospects?) there as back up back ups. Instead of Bruce Bochy saying "oh um derp uhm im gonna take mccann to have three catchers, uh" have an extra catcher from the minors who doesn't really take up a spot but is there in deep emergency. Have like 1 catcher, 1 pitcher, and one fielder there just in case, that way you are selecting these injury replacements based solely on who is the next best player, and not on positional need, AND these top minor leaguers get the distinct honor of being able to mingle with these MLB folk. Don't get to play, and should only play in emergency, but being there is amazing in itself.
i'll take it a step further only way you can vote is go to a game your ticket number is your id to vote want to cast 10,000 votes for your favorite scrub?... fine, buy 10,000 tickets idfk
I don't mind that people not attending the game can vote, some places don't have a nearby stadium and/or only have one that is a team they don't care about (think bout VRP/BlueZoo). But to make it essentially that those votes at the stadium make a small percent of what is the total vote kinda sucks. i think you should at least have to be watching the game Also, they can't start making AS votes in like the second week. So much complaining about Puig not having enough time in the majors when people were casting votes based off barely a month or wtv it was when they started voting.
His idea is impossible haha Okay, field the team with the highest WAR at each position and give the manager and players a pick or two?
