I don't think Jones was race baiting or trying to start any trouble. Really.
The dude is very involved in community, and spends beaucoup bucks helping kids in programs. I believe he is sincere, and just making an observation.
I agree with him on that statement, baseball is a white man's sport. Not every black kid is urban, but the ones that are in the city, can play round ball in schoolyards and football in the streets. Actually playing baseball needs a lot of space and basically a field. It's not like it used to be...it's almost a suburban thing now. There's no space for bb, unless it's organized and paid for.
I think he was correct also in saying that baseball gets played, every day, every game, if the blacks should boycott or something. A bb movement would, like the NFL's, accomplish zero. I think that was his point.
But football and basketball surely wouldn't, or couldn't be played...not a chance, should blacks decide to "strike"...
Of course, if you look like Puig or Cueto, I have no idea why you are not considered black from a Latino country, but they don't count.

I think a lot of it has to do with marketing. MLB sucks at marketing their players. Kids grow up idolizing LeBron, Kobe, KD, etc.

Baseball is absolutely indeed a white man's sport. Why the fuck are the stupid "unwritten rules" still around if it wasn't? I have absolutely no problem with Jones' comments.

We need a loogywith Avilan and JP being blah and Liberatore collapsing. He will work. If we have Kershaw, Hill, Maeda, Urias, and DeLeon next year those should no question be the 5 starters, wood or not

    It's this. 100%

Eric Davis and Darryl talked about it when they came over. How there isn't any baseball fields in the inner city neighborhood. That's the simple reason.
And of course there is something to that fact. It's no coincidence.

Why are unwritten rules "nonsense" and "stupid" ? How do they come onto play anyway, racially ?
Pretty sweeping statements without a mention of anything specific...what exactly?

Of course...a lot easier to get a basketball and play all night and day...and you can play football in the street fundamentally.
No way can you do the same with baseball. Oppo ends of the spectrum for the average kid in the city.

The silly backlash every time some Cuban or Dominican plays with some flair. Puig probably got the worst of it and to this day I don't remember a time where he was intentially doing it to show up the other team. You see it all the time. White hicks named "Bud" making comments about how when these players come to the States that they need to "play the game the right way". AKA the American Way or the White Way. I guess it could be a sweeping statement but you'd have to be blind not to notice it. Bumgarner is another prime example of the elitist white dude barking at everyone for "not playing the game the right way".

He was asked why there were no protests in baseball and he gave an understandable answer. He didn't bring race into it, the question did.

I didn't know you meant this...I was thinking about totally different unwritten rules.
    Generation gap, I imagine.

No I mean I get the whole not being a douche thing, but baseball is the sport best known for suppressing celebration and emotion. Boring.

Maintaining demeanor and some kind of tradition is more important in baseball than other sports...justified or not. I guess hecause it is much older on a pro level than the others. Way older. The thread of baseball is woven into our culture, and has for well over 100 years. Imo, that's important.
America grew up with baseball...they played it in the Civil War.
They still have their joy in winning...just not as demonstrative.
I guess it's old guy shit, but there's no way I ever want to see gansta attitude, ever, in baseball. Too late for the others.
It doesn't need to change into a taunt every time a HR is hit, or a K is recorded.

    It wasnt always that way.
Or else there wouldnt have been a Dodgers team in Brooklyn.
If kids were out playing stickball in the streets they would probably get arrested for carrying home made weapons.
Shit, i remember getting in trouble by a cop once for having a bat in the back of my car.
I was a bit rambunctious at the time and would get offended easily by cops always being suspicious and giving me the 'you fit a description' BS. So i would answer with a little bit of sarcasm or whatever and off i goes to the curb with the cuffs while they ran my name. All because i liked to carry a bat or two in my car. I loved baseball and would stop at parks to hit fly balls.
In fact the first exercise i ever knew was hitting the ball, dropping the bat, running to fetch the ball, running back, and hitting again.

I dont think what some of the guys in the 'lets make baseball fun again' class are making it gangsta.
I know what you mean though. There is a happy medium where you can have guys display personality and emotion and even sometimes a little bit of showing up the opponent (that has always been part of baseball) without it becoming 'gangsta'.
But here is the thing. Culture is made by the people. If baseball has more blacks in it then more of their culture will seep into the sport.
And that is ok, in fact its the way it outta be. Culture is always the folk religion. And its entirely based on demographics.

Sure, it will change, just like the language does with infusion of different ethnic groups.
It will all happen anyway...the inevitability of it is profound.
I just enjoy and appreciate some of the " unwritten rules" that linger within the framework of the game.
I grew up across the street from a stadium...and when there was nothing going on, they let the kids play in it...sometimes there was 5 games going on at once, all in different parts of the stadium. It was wonderful. Didn't realize then, as a kid, just how lucky we were. Football, too. But mostly bb and softball.
That wouldn't happen today, that's for sure.

I don't think it has to be gangsta, but when Puig used to be good, he was by far the most exciting player on the field. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Corey Seager, but if we had 8 of him roaming the field that'd be an incredibly boring team lol. My key rule is as long as you're not being a douche (Carlos Gomez at times) then you should be able to celebrate and have fun.
