Billingsley has 2nd setback By Mark Saxon | ESPNLosAngeles.com -- 6 hours ago CINCINNATI -- For the second time in less than two months, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Chad Billingsley has had a setback in his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery. Billingsley threw a 31-pitch bullpen session Tuesday in Arizona but reported weakness in his surgically repaired right elbow afterward. He will meet with team doctor Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Thursday. Billingsley made a rehab start for Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday, allowing a run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. According to reports, he topped out at 93 mph and was able to throw his fastball, changeup and curveball. He would have made his next rehab start Friday, but that outing now will be put on hold. In late April, Billingsley's rehab was cut short when he felt a pop in his elbow during a minor league start. He was diagnosed with tendinitis and told he had torn some scar tissue. The Dodgers were hopeful this spring that Billingsley could rejoin their rotation by June, but that seems like a long shot now. At the moment, they have no need for starting pitching, as Josh Beckett and Dan Haren both have pitched well in the back of their rotation. "I'm sure it's frustrating for him," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "For us, it's tough because when a guy's rehabbing, it's like you don't really have him until you have him." __

Maybe not serious, but frustrated for sure. If it's a serious concern, then yeah, hold him back. If it's just him being afraid to let go, then toss his ass back out there. He wouldn't be the first guy to let his psyche stand in the way of his comeback. Maybe just dial him back a notch or two and build some arm strength and stamina. Otherwise...take him out back and shoot him.
Chad Billingsley has a partially torn flexor tendon in his elbow. Not his UCL, but I have no idea how long this means he is out. Also AJ Ellis was activated today, Fed Ex back where he belongs.

Billingsley has been diagnosed with a partially torn flexor tendon. “If I do the rehab I would have a chance,” he said, “but the risk would be … tendon fails, that’s a six-month rehab after surgery. Doing three years’ rehab would be a grind.” As that quote indicates, it has already been a long road for Billingsley and his troubled right arm. He is in the last year of a three-year, $35MM pact that includes a $14MM club option for 2015. It seems highly likely at this point, of course, that Los Angeles will instead pay a $3MM buyout and let Billingsley hit the open market. __

Billingsley said he's "not ready to accept the season's over," however, he sounded like he is leaning toward surgery to repair the tear, but he first wants to meet with surgeon Neal ElAttrache, who is expected back in town Saturday night or Sunday. Other than surgery, Billingsley said the primary alternative is stem-cell injection and rehab, which offers a possible return near season's end, but with no guarantee the injection will heal the tear or keep it from getting much worse. "I run a big risk if I rehab it because if it fails, the Tommy John [repair could] fail," said Billingsley. "They both work hand in hand." The flexor tendon runs alongside the ulnar collateral ligament that was replaced last year in a Tommy John procedure. If the flexor tendon tears further after an injection and rehab, it could compromise the repaired ligament. Billingsley said he's spoken with teammate Brian Wilson, who had flexor tendon surgery before needing two Tommy John operations. Billingsley, 29, is receiving $12 million in the final guaranteed year of a three-year, $35 million contract that includes a $3 million buyout or $14 million salary for 2015. An All-Star in 2009, he hasn't pitched for the Dodgers since April 15, 2013. He twice had rehab assignments shut down because of discomfort, which turned out to be the flexor tendon injury, diagnosed the first time as tendinitis. __

He felt pain in his right elbow again, and an MRI exam showed a partially torn flexor tendon. Now Billingsley is faced with two options, neither of them appealing: He can rehab the elbow with the hope of pitching again this season, or opt for surgery. If he rehabs and it doesn't fix the problem, he could risk reinjuring the already repaired ulnar collateral ligament that the first surgery fixed, and would face another surgery that would cause him to miss all of next season. Opting for surgery now assures he won't pitch again this summer but he could return to pitch next year. It sounds as if Billingsley is leaning toward the surgery, but he won't know for sure until after he meets with team physician Neal ElAttrache on Sunday. I think Billingsley is done as a Dodger and if so it's a sad thing to see, he's had a very good career as a Dodger. Wouldn't mind getting him a ring on his way out of LA.
