Could Dodgers and Mets match up as trade partners? Dodgers have hole in rotation and excess in infield, while Mets have the opposite by Kate Feldman | SB Nation Mets Over the last few days, rumors have begun circulating that Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu, who has spent the first six weeks of the season on the disabled list due to tightness in his pitching shoulder, is contemplating season-ending shoulder surgery. If he does go in for surgery, Ryu would join right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy in missing the rest of the season, leaving the Dodgers with three starting pitchers and a few "maybe" replacements. So what does this have to do with the Mets? With the early success of Noah Syndergaard in his first two starts, the Mets will, once again, face a surplus of starting pitchers once Dillon Gee returns from the disabled list; Gee will pitch his second rehab start with St. Lucie on Thursday. Left-handed pitcher Steven Matz is also waiting in the wings (or Las Vegas) with a 1.80 ERA in 50 innings pitched. "From where we sit right now, if we can add an arm, that would certainly be helpful," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told Mark Saxon of ESPN. The Dodgers have a surplus of their own, finding themselves with an overabundance of infielders. Excluding corner infielders Adrian Gonzalez and Juan Uribe (once David Wright returns, the Mets seem to be relatively secure in those positions), Alex Guerrero, Howie Kendrick, Jimmy Rollins, and Justin Turner are all splitting time between second base and shortstop, as well as second baseball Darwin Barney and shortstop Corey Seager in Triple-A Oklahoma City. Did your ears perk up? Mets GM Sandy Alderson has said he isn't looking to trade for offense (at least, not until Wright and Travis d'Arnaud return), but as Wilmer Flores's and Daniel Murphy's errors keep mounting, a defensive upgrade is needed more and more. Danny Muno and Matt Reynolds are sitting in Las Vegas and Dilson Herrera waits on the disabled list with a broken finger, but Alderson also has proven hesitant to bring up the next wave of young players. Of course, this is all completely speculative and there's been no talk of a trade (at least, not on the record), but the pieces are there. Saxon ended his article with a proposal: "Now all the Dodgers have to do is find a team that needs a young infielder to build around and has too many starting pitchers." Doesn't that sound like the Mets?
Report: Dodgers looking at trading for star starting pitcher by Michael Cronin | Los Angeles Sun Times — 9 hours ago With the injury to pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu likely ending his season (and the earlier season-ending injury to Brandon McCarthy), the Dodgers are likely in the market for another starting pitcher, and they might just use their surplus of infielders to grab one. ESPN’s Buster Olney is reporting that the team could make a major splash, going after one of the National League’s best pitchers, who apparently wants big money (that his team likely can’t afford). “The Dodgers have used their resources in creative ways over the past seven months while hoping that their relatively thin starting rotation would hold up. Now they might be cornered into making a significant starting pitching investment, either this summer or in the fall. A number of industry folks believe they’ll take a run at Johnny Cueto.” The LA Times’ Bill Shaikin also has floated the White Sox’ Jeff Samardzija and the Nationals’ Doug Fister or Jordan Zimmerman as possible replacements for Ryu and McCarthy. The Dodgers are likely to include one of their many corner infielders in any deal — like Alex Guerrero — especially following the official signing of highly touted Hector Olivera.
Well, you certainly are entitled to feel that way...but I do think without the pitching problems solved, our offense, which in no way would/will keep up it's torrid stats (we've already proved that big time), we spin our wheels. SF proved that...to me anyway; that was sobering. I'm wondering why then , people are basically calling for JRo's head, AJ for DFA, Puig has to come back yesterday, bring up Seagar now, get rid of Uribe now (certainly not because of his defense), etc. those seem to me to be all offensive upgrade wishes. Mostly. You may be right. But SF wasn't great pitching...it was terrible hitting that killed us. Bumgarden wasn't spectacular at all. IDK how it plays out the way it is now...I don't think we are really as good as we looked in April and the beginning of May. The obvious holes and precarious signing of McCarthy are bearing their rotten fruit. In juries have smacked us in the mouth, too. Most of all, with troubles we didn't have all of a sudden a stark reality, Mattingly looks to be way over his head. It's a lot easier managing when your BP is awesome and your team is averaging 5+ runs per game, but that may be in the past. I hope I'm wrong. Probably am.
fwiw wouldn't mind having hamels [of course] but not for what that swarthy little douchebag ckunt amaro will likely want in return Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com reports that the Dodgers are generating plenty of interest in their younger players from clubs that have pitching to deal. The Phillies, Reds, and Athletics, among other teams, are “scouring” the Los Angeles farm, per Gammons. The veteran journalist also adds that some other executives think that L.A. could potentially make a run at Cole Hamels by dangling interesting utilityman Enrique Hernandez, pitchers Zach Lee and Chris Anderson, and catcher Julian Leon to Philadelphia. While Gammons does not make clear whether his sources suggest that package would be enough, it certainly seems at face value that Philly would demand a headliner to top things off.
Lee, Anderson, Enrique and Leon for Hamels would be fucking awesome. If Gammons is really hearing that bunch of guys could be dangled for Hamels, man. Let's do it already! De Leon + some of those guys fuck yeah do it
let's not confuse Jose De Leon with Julian Leon. the Phils already have a good, young catcher in their system. De Leon they can have..maybe. at the end of the day the Reds and A's are better trade partners.
I guess the "Dodger depth" is actually wearing different uniforms these days. I know, I know...it's for...uh...maybe 2017/18 ???
In my mind there is no dilemma because the FO is not giving up Corey, Joc or Julio!!!!!!!!!!! Bolsinger is doing well but obviously he has the potential to have a Frias meltdown. Give Zach a shot for Christ's sake!! Beachy is going to be ready soon I hope.
can't help but feel like Lee is being held back for strategic reasons..maybe to keep his value right where it is. if he comes up to the show and struggles big time maybe that trade value takes a dip. they had designs on dealing him for Howie Kendrick 2-3 years ago, so he's probably still available..maybe..
You could be right but IDK if they value minor league performance over the majors. The one knock on Zach is his base on balls and he's been improving that aspect of his game. Maybe it's just me but I'd like to see what he can do up here.
