Don't Kemps stats for next year depend in part on what he is surrounded with? How is that looking right now?
True, although he didn't have a whole lot surrounding him this past year. I''d like to see what he projects for Braun, sans Fielder..
http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/4123/matt-kemp Irish, look at the contract from the perspective of the new owner. He is getting Kemp for a seven year 150 million contract which averages over 21 million a year. Frank got him on the cheap but not the new owner.
I hear what you're saying, but I'm actually going to side with Frank a little bit on this one. He got Kemp signed to a long-term deal, pleasing the fans and (arguably) at the same increased the value of the franchise to potential buyers. If Kemp keeps producing, $21.5MM a year could actually prove to be a good deal.
of course it will. the contract got done and thats what matters. you can pick it apart if you want but i'm thrilled to have matt locked up.
I am very happy with the contract but I have some number concerns for 2013. Take a look at the projected 2013 payroll with players under contract for then. The total is 89 million and doesn't include Loney or Eithier etc. It does include old friends like Manny and Jones and even Kuroda has 2 million deferred. Give it a look and imagine being the new GM and it is your first year to build your own team. Imagine you are an owner trying to get a handle on operating costs. http://www.truebluela.com/2010/11/30/1840626/dodgers-payroll-worksheet Click on a player name for more contract details Pos Player Service Time* 2011 2012 2013 2014 Totals *through 2011 $114,846,132 $106,507,432 $89,383,716 $59,375,000
Not to be a dick, but I mean we didnt get a huge hometown discount or anything. I'm not saying he wouldn't have gotten 7 years 140 or 150 on the open market, he would have, but its not like we got some good bargain for him wanting to be here. I understand he could have easily wnted to test the FA market but whats essentially 7 years 140-150 for Free agency is not someone dying to be here for the good of the organization...
Kemp took this deal because he wanted to be here, if he wanted to be a dick about it he could have. There was an interview on the Mason/Ireland show in which Dave Stewart said that Ned and Matt ironed out their differences and that was a factor in his desire to be here.
I think what he meant doyer was Kemp saying he wanted to stay here for the rest of his career. May have been leverage, but better than the Manny "gas is up and so am I" bullshit. EDIT: Damn it, Doughty beat me to it... and said it better.
Kemp on the free-market, assuming he does even 80% of what he did this year = annual of $22M/year. We got a discount, however minimal, we got a discount.
Yup and his structuring it so he only gets paid 10 million next year is saying a lot. It is not just the dollar amount but the structuring of it especially for the 2012 season. He could have waited until after Pujols and Fielder signed and used especially Fielder as a bench mark. He could have waited until after the MVP award and used that as leverage. He did things in away to give the Dodgers credibility moving forward.
since i stopped reading the whole thread here. Ill ask now is this your only argument? Every players babip goes down as age goes up. Its called getting old.I swear kemp on the open market will and would get easy 170-200 mill over 7-10 years. Its not like he like Baustita from Tor where he came out of nowhere with a career year. Hes been gradually getting better year in and year out.People can say his DEF is terrible and maybe thats why im not a scout but i know what i see . He chases down balls throws people out and makes triples into double and doubles into singles with his arm.Not to mention hes the only player in the league with 40/40 type speed power dynamic. Maybe he will never bat above 32o again but id bet he will bat 290-300 with speed and power and rbi through out the course of this contract which is a STEAL!!!!
To me, Kemp is what Soriano was supposed to be. Soriano's frame is just not there. His arm is also poor. Do not get me started on that skip-throw he does. Look at his contract for that time period and Kemp is a steal in today's market.
