The MLB thread on the other site is full of hate over the League signing. we need to get used to the growing hatred for our big spending team. Now I know what Yankee fans felt like all those years. It'll be ok if we actually win something next year.

I never hated the Yankees. They make money and invest it in the team. I always had respect for that while other fans bitched about it.

Right there with you on that. Never hate good ownership of other teams. Envious, yes, hate, never.

Only teams I hate are the Giants and the Angels.

Yankees are hated because people think they buy championships. From my perspective, they've only "bought" one in 2009. The four championships in five years from 96-00 were won with a lot of homegrown guys and hard nosed ball players like Paul O'Niel. Even then, with all the money they spend, they haven't won every year. But they do make it a point to field a championship caliber team.

    my guess would be jealousy
sure you could argue we overpaid
and, in a way, I actually like that we did
kind of a fuck you to the rest of baseball

    • In the time it took us to debate this signing the Dodgers made double the money back with their new TV contract.

    League is a fucking badass

"The Giants had a great year, and they won the games they needed to win. But in 2013, the Los Angeles Dodgers will be the team everyone wants to beat or tries to beat. We'll be looking over our shoulders for teams chasing us. This year, it was vice versa."

Can't pretend like Ned isn't constantly incapable of getting a great deal though. I suppose it might not matter, but there is a growing perception that we are simply not a very smart organization. Eventually Ned needs to go. He got Gonzo...great...it's not like the Red Sox didn't get everything they wanted out of him...he resigns League...great...in another over pay. I'm not saying League deserves to get less money than last season, but did you see his stats in SEA? They must be extremely confident those mechanical adjustments were his career savior. Even so, League is making more money than Josh Willingham. Why? Because these mid market teams are able to make DEALS. Ned doesn't make deals IMO. He is the king of extra years too. Capuano, Lilly, and Harang all to milti year deals when I can guarantee Harang and Cap would have signed with another team on 1 year deals for less money likely.

I just don't see Ned making deals. I see him just doing stuff. I think he's an excellent PR man, he can evaluate talent relatively well as I am sure he does some intensive scouting, but he is a shit negotiator IMO. I think this team needs a new leader.

With that said, welcome back League. I think you're immensely talented and I hope more of what you did for us is forthcoming.

"There's a market established," said Jeremy Affeldt to Baggarly in reference to Brandon League's new contract (Twitter link). The veteran southpaw said he will cherish his time with the Giants if he doesn't re-sign with them

This might be why they are a bit pissed. We just set the market for relievers and could do the same for starters. We could, in essence, make us the front runners for most players based solely on what we can offer that other teams cannot.

I don't give a shit how much money we have, because honestly we don't really know. we just know what they tell us. I think it was an overpay for the talent we acquired. I know League was absolutely lights out for us and I hope he continues to be, regardless of how much money he got or should of gotten. He's been a good, slightly above average reliever/closer his whole career.

bottom line, I think we could have done more with the money we gave him. I guess the only way to prove I'm right is if we don't make any other signings.

I hope I'm wrong and we sign Grienke or trade for Shields or something we haven't thought of yet. and League shoves it

We, like the Yankees, don't really "set" the market, We just get first choice of whoever we want. It would be a mistake to think $30 million is now the going rate for relievers, unless you plan on signing with the Dodgers or pin stripes.

Reckless spending, careless spending, overpaying for a setup guy, etc.

I see their point to a degree. But man they are apeshit over this, it's many many pages of hate and ridicule! I still wonder why he got so many years and a high yeraly pay. Ned is to easy, was there a real threat he'd actually test the market if you offered him only 2/$14M or 3/$18M? I don't think League's track record is strong enough to force us into that big of contract. Then again, it's not that big a contract to us anymore.

All in all he's still the best option considering the 33 year old Soriano wants a a 4/$60M!!! I like the deal, I just don't see why we seemingly outbid ourselves. Reminds me of Ned signing Manny.

Until there's an indication that signings like this will slow us down from getting other players, the money is moot. Did anyone post about Guggenheim buying the Dodgers on PSD? Maybe they missed that?
