Wasn't that also Jim Brewer's thing, too? He threw the circle change to then trick you with his screwball? Did I remember that wrong or backwards? I just remember his baseball card saying something like that on the back.
Don't recall that. I remember the screwball turned his career around in his late 20s, early 30s. Also recall him getting the holy shit beaten out him by Bill Martin. https://thisdayinbaseball.com/belie...-then-he-advances-to-retrieve-it-from-brewer/
Outstanding ... Baseball when it was still full of testosterone and bullshit. I miss that game. I still haven't unboxed all my late 60s and all 70s Topps baseball cards. Pre-internet, those cards gave us fun facts about athletes and the game, remember? In between then and dial up, we always had Ross Porter to tell us EVERY FECKIN THING about every player during every at-bat. Anyway ... Billy Martin knocked down Frank Thomas? He was a big guy. Billy was crazy. That guy would fight anybody.
Excellent bio on Billy. Complex character to be sure. https://www.amazon.com/Number-1-Billy-Martin/dp/0440064163

As much as many here loathe Cards nation, this is a great baseball book, penned by Whitey Herzog himself .... https://www.amazon.com/White-Rat-Ba...53844877&sprefix=Whitey+herzog,aps,190&sr=8-3 I'll check out those Billy books. I've got two months of sitting on my ass here in bluegrass to read my fat ass off.
Wow ... an actual sweep?!?! Did Roberts eff up? I thought beating shitty teams demanded losing one or more in the series? Did the body snatchers get Dave?
Good observation, and I have the answer. Davey missed a game for his daughter's graduation, which is the only explanation for the sweep.
Actually, the more I think about it... Roberts is always looking to give his players a game off, seemingly more so when they're on a hot streak. He should do the same for himself. Stay home and rest up... let Geren manage once in a while. Maybe we'll see more sweeps - it worked this week.
