The first car I had was my grandpa's donated '72 Chevelle Malibu. The first car I bought was a '69 Camaro Z/28.

Technically, my first car was a 1979 Chevy El Camino but the first car I paid for was a used 2010 Acura TSX
I'm going to keep my TSX until it falls apart

i had to learn to drive all the work trucks first
at 15 dad gave me the keys to an old dodge pickup and told me to try driving it in circles on the back property
he said if i could drive that i could drive anything
within a week i was driving it on the street and to jobsites/pickups etc. even though i had no license
it was a true beast w a 411 rear end and mechanical tailgate
411 means 1st gear must me used from a dead stop but tops out at about 5 mph
you can carry a heavy shit straight up a hill but its fucked up since you have to immediately shift to second to get any speed going at all
i was bouncing that thing like crazy for weeks and people i went to school with saw me and fuck people were having fun watching the spectacle
but i finally got it under control and learned tricks like slowly gliding toward stop traffic in second gear etc.
i mean it had a 4 on the floor that was easily a foot shift in between gears and you had to be fast
taught me how to drive tractors and forklifts when he could trust me and then bought me my first riding mower lol i was the slave like my brothers before me
but it sure beat push mowers!
and he was right i can drive anything after that!
looked a bit like this but yellow

Before I ever bought a car, my father was pretty generous woth allowing me to use his much of the fime.
At one time,he jad a Chevy Corvair...I don't imagine many on here are familiar with this oddity. Anyway, the car had a little put-put rear engine, and it was really hard starting it in cold weather. My father 's solution was to wrap the engine in a big heavy old coat each night, and remove it every morning. He had a job that started early in the morning, so he couldn't waste time cranking the car at 5:00 AM.
So, one Saturday morning, after my usual Fri. night debauchery and bacchanalia, hung way over, I borrow the car.I start it right up, but totally forgot the warming overcoat thrown over the engine.
Now the coat is wound to shreds, completely entwined within all aspects of the engine.
Hours later, and I mean hours, after picking the remants out with tools of every sort, he declared that he thought it was time to get my own car.
it always surprised me that he didn't blow his top like Krakatoa, but amazingly, he didn't.

    Outstanding anecdote. Thanks, BZoo.

My folks had a Corvair ... and a Rambler. Tough to choose between which one was worse. The '68 Dodge Dart that replaced them both was by far the best of the three.

When I drove tne car around tne city, full of my juvenile delinquent friends, they used to say it was like being in a rowboat with a Mercury outboard motor. Even kinda sounded like one, actually.
Being high must of the time, the remarks were always like " are we going fucking crabbing, or what"...or, " why don't I paint a 109 on the side like Kennedy's PT boat" ?
I can close my eyes and still hear it now...

that's hysterical and can totally relate
doesn't rain here as often but had this roommate w one of those huge mid 70s gran torinos in need of shocks
we drove across town to visit his paisano for some herb and got seriously baked before heading back
by then it was pouring and the streets flooded out pretty quick so when we hit an intersection the car would bounce and giant waves of water blast off of either side
i made some boat comments and then was reduced to hyperventilating to the point of not being able to speak as it happened again and again
he didn't find it as funny while he was trying to control that beast and being in a car w a laughing hyena passenger is never a good look

The guy in the car was a Navy Seal and Blackwater/Triple Canopy operative. Cool stories from the sandbox!
