His son works for my wife's hospital. Got to meet his father two years ago. A kind man, very pleasant.
What we owe him, as BB fans, is beyond measure. What pitchers owe him, is even beyond evaluation. Another "Dodger" major game-changing and ground breaking achievement to add to their history as the most important team to ever play the game. Thank you, Doctor Jobe.
I frequent his facilities in the greater LA area. He leaves behind a grand legacy. Great, great work Dr. Jobe RIP
FWIW, I used a Jimmy Piersall glove back in the day-if any of you have heard of him. They all said I was crazy, so I figured it suited me that I had his model. But a Jackie Robinson model bat.
Thanks to Dr Jobe, I can still go out and play softball with my friends and someday I will be able to go out and play catch with my kids. Can't say thank you enough to the man. RIP
Fwiw, pitchers weren't always pussies with innings limits, almost a week of rest and 6 innings being a quality start. How many curveballs did tommy john throw before needing TJS?
heard hershisher say today that the Dr. fought in the battle of the bulge, was captured, and escaped!
That was absolutely fascinating commenting by Orel today about Dr. Jobe and the beginnings and early TJ surgeries....true insight and beautifully put by Orel. IMO. the guy just exudes intelligence, and the Gugs made a great move by putting his brain in the booth. I can't imagine why it took so long. I always thought he was just a little too hip for the Williamsport, PA room, but knowing O, he probably considered it an honor. When the day comes that Vinny will no longer grace the broadcast booth for us, I truly believe we could do worse than Orel and Steiner. Whatever you think of Steiner (not too great on here , I don't think), he does have a good BB voice. And Orel just gives you a psychological angle that makes the game all the more interesting. I look forward to his input from now on. Great story about Dr.Jobe when O started his 2nd career, wasn't it? And loved the "patience of Job " quip he made. Top notch. Nice win....and Dee looking very, very slick at 2b. I can't root hard enough for this kid....
lol, my first glove was a bobby knoop model had this weird star-type webbing edit: can't believe i found one...
For a while, I was a pitcher/1b, and there was a six finger model glove that seemed to serve the purpose perfectly. Instead of the web it had the other finger where that usually was, obviously, and it worked for scooping out low throws It was expensive (back then); I think it was 45 bucks, a fortune. Being basically insane, when I was playing 1b, I used my Jackie model bat, but when I pitched, I used a Nellie Fox model bat, a complete opposite really. The Jackie bat was very thin handled, and has "flexible whip action" written on it....when I pitched, used the Fox bat which was very thick handled. Who knows why. I got way more power from the Jackie bat, and copied his stance, then switched to the Duke's stance. Probably why I was much better at football. I think because people used to say "BB was a thinking man's game"- so naturally I overthought everything. Football is basic brute stuff, and for a pretty big guy who could run and smash into people, it suited me better.
